Well I think you can ditxh the actual lid plate if you're gonna use a whole disc and band. I suspect it would colonize relatively super quicklike if so.

Just put the whole disk.under the ring but on top of the lid. I am not a fan of cutting up sfd for metal lids as they dont adhere very well. Dont replace the lid with the sfd or you'll have grain drying out problems.

Oh damn, you're right?! I don't know why I didn't think about that but yeah there really is no need for structural support on top if it's all filter.

I would probably silicone it to the band to make it easier to handle.

WBS. If I lose a pt in the pursuit of knowledge, I'm ok with that.

Wbs is particularly forgiving with excess moisture ime: might be an interesting experiment, but at what end?

Wbs does seem incredibly forgiving with excess moisture.
Strait white millet was an absolute pain in my god damn ass. Really difficult for me to get cooked properly. Half the millet comes out uncooked while the other half has detonated. Colonized like crapola.
I thnk after walkabout when i start back up again imma get some kinda screen that lets the little white millets thru but keeps the rest so i can have WBS without the "BS".

Keeping my millet jars up and out of the water of the pressure took care of my detonated lower half of jar.

jar-sfd-lid-ring is what we did for most of ours, exposes whole sfd some grains got stuck after shakes (initial and 30%), not sure if it is a big deal but we plan on bleach cleaning them clean after spawning.
jar-lid-sfd-ring, did one this way, made sfd puff up a bit, air space between sfd and lid should be good tho as it is filtered. also probably better to cover in foil to keep PC from dripping onto so much exposed SFD.
i wouldn't do the sfd w/ ring only, too much GE will dry grains on top likely causing issues, as well water drips from PC (and soak thru from grains inside?).. also no support to sfd when a2g/g2g and getting it sealed nicely when peel it off and put it back after inoc
trying to avoid using rtv as well. got full sfd under lid from PrimalSoup sig thread. the pp5 plastic and single piece stainless steel lids we drilled 1/4" hole (some got two holes) and use entire sfd under lid, those also look good.

Cutting little quarter sized pieces of SFD and siliconing them over a 1/4" hole in my steal lids worked great. No foil or nothing. Crack is on to something thou. Raising the jars up a bit outta the PC water does make a bit of a difference.

I keep everything up I PC like now, Jars and Bags and LCs. Agar is the only thing that I'll let have a water bath during a PC cycle. I found it carmalized my LC more, unless using GW LC. I use the same oats
