I ask bc I'm trying to relearn mono tubs. If my substrate choice isn't going to impact yeilds as much as the quality/quantity of my spawn then I know where to focus my efforts. I have a few days before my jar hits 100%. It sounds like the best choice is to g2g so I have more spawn instead of spawning my tub?
A qt of grain will yield more than a qt of bulk. We can guesstimate an ounce per qt of spawn. You will/ should yield more per qt at 1:4 than you would at 1:2 but not twice as much, more food more water more surface area is more mushrooms...however you will yield more per sq foot at 1:2 than you would at 1:4.

Awesome thank you
Last question I also have a bag of wbs that is knotting up but I can't spawn it so I'm fruiting from the bag. 4-5 quarts wbs. I don't usually do it this way. Does the guestimation still carry over when it's 100% grain and not spread out? These are just before I cased it and introduced fruiting conditions.

No your yield will suffer because that guesstimate is based on good conditions for the species so optimal water content ,sub texture , pinning points ECT. Grain doesn't hold much for water and cubes don't fruit well in high nutritional pinning points and you have limited surface area

Those pics were from last week. I cased it with about an inch coir/peat/verm 1/1/2. I also misted it some before casing it which is when I found the hole in the bottom. The wbs isn't even on top so my casing thickness varies but I made it on the moist side and I sprinkled it in fluffy. I went more generous than I would normally case.
This is Redboy from an old print. Only time I've ever had this print germinate. All I'm after is prints and clones with this bag. Just sucks it's a lot of wbs. Was gonna be for a mega mono. I had seen somebody growing using only bags in big tubs recently and it looked epic.

Let me know if it's for real I might just order a new one instead of replacing all the rusty ol parts and leaky seals on mine. Idk though last one I ordered was through a seller on amazon and turned out to be a big scam. Maybe it was Ebay I dont really remember but it makes me weary of ordering one of the "good deal" prestos.

Can I inoculate an LC (to be) jar with a biopsy from a stalk? Not agar, but straight from the first fruiting. Will myc grow in it? I plan to use oat broth that has been PC'd in media jars or maybe baby food jars.

perhaps from maintained sterile invivo/vitro grow? damn, i feel light years away from getting to LC- this sounds like an awesome easy and simple way to make a clean LC of known good genetics, just concern over unsterile fruit and biopsy method. would h2o2 help clean the fruit if not maintained sterile from germ to harvest?

no you put it to agar.
aand its just invitro. invivo is something else entirely.

mushboy, with respect, OMC uses invitro (re: in vitro) as acceptable meaning for behind/inside glass (or pp5) and i get it, but it is not technically correct, except maybe in biopsy to petri (or LC in this case use).
regardless, does Inthepit's idea of biopsy to LC really have no merit? i'd be happy to hear if so or if tested honestly and found to be not viable.

With proper sterile technique it's gonna work, I wouldn't recommend it. I'd still just put that biopsy (clone, whatever) to agar and get an agar wedge once I have clean growth though.

getting that agar wedge broke up in LC is the tough spot for me, have looked at the blender jar lid mod but thought some clone tissue would work nicely, especially you get it from known good/preferred genetics as LC from agar grows still wont tell you if it will grow and what it will grow like.

Tissue to LC can work but is absolutely less safe than using a clean piece of myc from a clean agar plate. Breaking the wedge up isn't important. The myc will grow off of the wedge and into the liquid. Breaking that up is important and can be done with a stir plate or by swirling the LC.
No matter how you noc up grain you won't know how it's gonna grow until you've grown it. Even if you clone a nice fruit from nice ms cluster, you don't know what it'll do until it does it. It doesn't matter if the LC was made from tissue or from agar made nocced up with tissue. You still have to grow it out to know what you've got. I don't usually make an LC out of a culture until i know that it rocks and i want a bunch of tubs to do what it does.
