Yeah good point, I'm sure when it gets closer to 0 and the furnace reins supreme I'll have to.
Any recommendations on a good efficient one that doesn't come with costly filters?

From 1 clones how many rounds would you go before going back to an earlier plate again?
Something like this sound ok?
-Original clone plate -Transfer to 3 plates -Use 1 for grains -Store other 2 -Grow 5-6 rounds of tubs -Return to clone plates -G2G 1 -Transfer to 3 new plates with the other -Continue for years
What you’re describing should be fine, but here’s what I’m doing at the moment: Clone from orginal MS tub Clean on agar Grain G2g (up to 36 jars depending on how many masters) Fruit and print only
I’m seeing a culture that I’ve been using since I started losing vigor, so I’m just gonna let the genetics die and find a new clone from an MS tub and start over. I’ve fruited at least 2 pounds from this culture so it’s definitely cool to toss out.

Camera93 - From spore, RW myc has always been cottony for me. I dnt see rhyzo till i try to clone, which i've all but given up on.
Edmunter - Ya knw dude, i pretty much decided that ever couple batches imma start from spore again. Since my main focus (after seeing if these RW's will actually be rusty and white) is to small batch PE & APE, i'll prolly jst grab a few syringes from a trusted vendor and cold store 'em.
I have a built in wall heater below my window six feet from my space. The winter is a bitch cuz the cold air is dry and the heater doesnt help.

So, I'm a beginner at mushroom cultivation. This is my first grow trying out P. Cubensis and the PES Hawaiian strain. I'm using the PFTek method and I've currently got my cakes sitting on a bed of perlite in a shotgun tub, with jar lids full of vermiculite acting as a barrier between the cakes and perlite. I was misting and fanning the tub 3-5 times daily, and at first I kept the temp between 70°-80° Farenheit and humidity between 75-85%. But for two weeks my cakes wouldn't pin and the outside of the cakes started to bruise and turn blue. I went to a friend for help, they said I needed to raise the humidity. Now I keep the tub between 85%-95% humidity and the temp almost constantly at 70°F. I started getting pins within days. But only 5 out of 8 cakes are pinning, and only from the bottom of the cakes where bruising is minimal. And now some of the blue on the cakes is starting to turn a sickly green. Should I dunk and roll the cakes that aren't pinning? Should I try to carve off the bruising if it's only on the outside? I'm having partial success and I know this is my first grow, but I'd like to get as close to 100% success as I possibly can. Any suggestions?

Hey welcome home! It'll be better if you start your own thread with pics over in the Getting Started forum. People will be better able to help you that way.

Good points. I'll try a pan on it while I look for a basic humidifier if it doesn't do the trick.

Do the fruit always rip up the sub with oats? WBS didn't do it to much, but oats, boy do they tear up the substrate when you try to twist and pull. I started using scissors and cutting them. Does that happen with other grains?

Anyone have any tips for opening and removing blank plates from a sleeve with only about 1/2 inch of clearance between the sleeve and the top of the SAB when the sleeve is standing straight up? I've been just tilting the sleeve, cutting it open, then individually removing 5-6 plates until there's enough clearance to pull the sleeve off the top. But not sure if this is the best way to do it to prevent exposing blank plates to contams
In the process of looking for a larger SAB atm with good visibility, but until then I gotta make it work in the current one. Wish it was just a tad taller

Get a bigger sab, those plates you dropped trying( don't lie you know you dropped a couple) make great little windows for sabs

Stick the whole sleeve in there and cut the sleeve in the middle making two shorter halves. Use one half and seal the other with cling wrap or use a bread tie or something.
That's why I like my flow hood, I can just attach a bigger bag of I need more room to work.

Haha I have dropped a few unfortunately. Also, have a full wasted sleeve cause the gf decided to open a sealed one cause she needed to trace a circle instead of just grabbing one I had laying around What you mean by windows? And yeah I have a big 200 qt SAB but I didn't realize how opaque it actually is when I was in the store buying it. Currently trying to think of a way to modify the front panel of it to give me better visibility. Maybe cut out a large square in the front and tape/silicone a clear polycarbonate sheet in the front? Idk yet. Gonna be the project for this weekend. Because if I can up the visibility in that beast it would solve a lot of quality of life issues

Idk why I never thought about just cutting it in half and then pulling the sleeve off the two shorter stacks. I'm gonna have to try that next time. Thanks!

R.I.P.Zappa said: Used a infrared last year, shoe boxes got pretty dry, pretty quick, even with a humidifier going. No matter were I pointed and moved it, it would just popcorn dry everything out. I ended up using modified monos in the end because the shoe boxes couldn't keep up. This year I got the oil filled radiator style. It is a night and day difference, uses far less electricity, warms the room up better and shoe boxes don't dry near as fast. I just leave it on 65 and it keeps the whole room around 71. It was about 55$ but well worth the energy and time savings.

I was looking at one of these on sale at canadian tire...hmmm probably cheaper just to buy a humidifier at this point hell I tihnk I have a cheapo one in storage somewhere.

I just buy a thick piece of plexi-glass for 15$ comes in the exact size for a SAB. visibility has always been an issue for me as I have bad eyesight. I love the plexi glass! and yes, crom I've even made little glass windows in my SAB with picture frame glass, lol!

I have 3 flow hoods now (pardon redundance) and still bust out the SAB weekly. an invaluable tool IMO.
