True. I've got full size stainless kitchen racks also for spawn and tubs. What I like about these piece together ones is the convenience and durability of the cover vs taping together construction plastic.

Mine didn't rust and I had it for about 6 years. Shelves were plastic and the metals bars painted. Plus any rust would have been surface rust no biggie.
Also for 35 bucks you get a nice zippered door and actual heavy duty vinyl marerial.
I did notice there is different makers or models with varying quality tho so maybe I just ended up with a decent one.
Idk. When I had mine I never finished it for mushrooms just used it for plants so I can't say they are great or worth the money.

I know this is millionth time I’ve posted this but....

If you could find some clearer painters plastic (you can) and sealed the bottom this is, not cheaper, but a much more quality Martha. It’s not much more expensive, it’s 35 for the shelving and 20 for 100 (probably 3oo actually) feet of 4mil painters plastic. And it is 200% more sturdy and you can make it as big (or as small) as you want. The adhesive zippers (comes with 2) are 11bucks a box. Not as nice as a traditional see thru green house but it will last you much longer, and if you accidentally let a bunch of tubs mold out? It’s 100x easier to clean. Throw away the plastic, bleach the shelf, and put some new plastic on.

Been wanting to put a write up on this and my grain drying tray in my journal but honestly it’s all been covered   I don’t even need such a tent anymore , as it only was created to soothe my paranoia against contamination (I’m positive I could just use an unprotected shelf), but I’m terry sure I’ll be making my pan cyan Martha out of something similar, while simultaneously following JOCs pan Martha tek.

what good is the cover though if the caging rusts?  painting plastic doesnt wear out unless your careless.  u could buy a thicker ml plastic but why?  just saying... Ive been through a lot of marthas and they always end up in the dump. my plastic shelves have lasted almost 10 yrs. I have like 5 martha covers saved in garbage bags but have never been able to re-use them and I've re-used spawn bags.

I skip the zippers ang get a whole-sale deal on all my painting supplies;)  the shelving is the cost and that can be found for cheap especially if buying used.

thats the heavy plastic.I use the stff fer masking windows.

yers looks nice tho. I'm all about practicality and functionality over looks

I ran my Martha for the years and it didn't rust either but I keep my evaporation rate high so the humidity is high but my Martha ISN'T soggy.

My friend is a contractor so we have all the plastic and zippers we need if I need to convert a rack into a gh. My Martha is going to be set up for pans and my cubes will be in mono tubs on the racks and in the walk-in gh. Never had luck with tubs but I'm a lot more skilled than I was when I first started.

Ted, what do you use to keep it closed? I actually don’t need the zippers on this shelf because I don’t need to keep any heat in but....
If I were making this into an actual Martha for Pans I would keep the zippers and add a piece of plastic underneath to keep moisture and heat in.

Obviously as a spawn shelf the whole plastic apparatus is unneseccary but I was paranoid. I’m pretty positive I could get away with keeping spawn in open air. I was just not so sure about the filtering efficiency of polyfil, because I only use polyfil lids.

Also ted, if I were going bigger than say, 4 pan cyan tubs, I would use those Plano 5piece plastic shelves, and use 2 of them and make a walk in Martha. The only thing I don’t like the Plano plastic ones is they ARE NOT sturdy unless you have a lot of weight on them. Accidentally knocked an empty one over with my elbow and I don’t trust anything like that to hold my spawn.

I’m going to be making a dual sided on of these as a pan Martha in the coming weeks, I’ll post a little walk thru if it works out

yeah, thats what I do now. I brace them up in a corner and put studs through em into the wall.

wait... why is your spawn jars in a plastic tent?

That’s not ghetto at all, especially if your not running a humidifier in there. Tucking extra plastic should keep heat in just fine. I would totally seal the bottom and use zippers if anyone is thinking of adding forced moisture to the air. As a spawn shelf you don’t even need the plastic unless it’s dummy cold where you live. I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to add a heater inside that tent  didn’t think I’d actually ever have to “incubate” my jars  bout to be bacteria city in my shit... can’t find a good heater without buying ANOTHER mushroom ecosphere on MWGK...

Very well could be. I live in high desert. I keep snakes and so many ppl argue about what parameters to set things or 'you don't need this...' 'why are you doing that...' they don't keep in mind there's ppl from all over the globe and what works in one place might not work the same in another.

@jbgtaa I'm going to have to use an oil heater in mine. Thinking about using it to keep the walk-in gh mid 70's and then have the heater next to the pan Martha. The heat will rise and I'll catch it and vent it into the upper shelf of the Martha with a cardboard piece like the hood over a stove. Won't know if this is practical until the rest of my gh comes and I can mess with everything. I have also used those emergency blankets (mylar) behind the Martha. Learned this in a survival course, what happens is radient heat (ir) passes through the plastic of the Martha until it hits the back wall and it's reflected back into the Martha. This heats the air in the Martha a second time and it stays there. I've used this in the past to bump temps without having to heat everything, throwing off my humidity with hot dry air. It's a cheap source for mylar, couple bucks for a huge sheet.

Here's a pic of my old one. In this case the mylar is in the front bc my florescent light is on the back. The tiny bit of heat that a 2ft neon puts off was enough to bump me up ten degrees and get me through the winter without making my family miserable by heating the whole house. All bc the mylar reflects the heat back into the enclosure.

yeah, I hear ya. observation and knowing your conditions is everything.

have you tried these warm mist humidifiers?  https://www.target.com/p/vicks-warm-steam-vaporizer-humidifier-with-night-light-1-5gal/-/A-10403767?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&CPNG=PLA_Other_All+Products%2BShopping_Local&adgroup=All+Products_Catchall&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=c&location=9032376&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6eTtBRDdARIsANZWjYZux1IPayCLtGlBhAj1YncN6nQn0JlnCPFqVqmUFzx4FFKHtomEe0EaAgGEEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds ; mine was heating the ambient temp from 60F to 70-75F in my 2 shelf plastic'd GH on a 15 min every hour timer with fans(normal, small) and exhaust(computer).  also on timers.

when u add the salt as per instructions it makes em kick ass!

just insulate the plastic and have a light source between the plastic and insulation material

Same settings I had mine on, 15min on 45 off. No I haven't used one bc I didn't think it would put out enough humidity like a cool mist impeller type but I do own one. Maybe I'll give it a shot. That would be a lot nicer than using heat mats or the weird chimney thing I was dreaming up. (for pans)

The mylar thing sounds silly but it's a good trick to know. Mylar reflects heat at a very high percentage. This is why it's good for weed grows but that stuff is expensive. With this idea if it doesn't work out it cost $2. Toss it in the car for an emergency. But if applied correct it works way too good. That whole Martha was wrapped but I had to remove it all except that piece on the door.
Only rules are
1. The Martha must be clear-ish
2. The mylar goes on the outside of the wall opposite the heat source.

*Not sure what you're talking about here but I want to know:

'when u add the salt as per instructions it makes em kick ass!'

'just insulate the plastic and have a light source between the plastic and insulation material'

(I've never actually looked at the thing, got it for my kid when he was sick)

when I lived in a different area I used to be obsessed with incubation soo I've tried a lot of weird stuff

All ill be doing during the winter is adding one (maybe 2) space heaters to my lab. Its small enough (12'x5') that a space heater(s) will warm the room enough to affect the spawn. And 72f isnt a ridiculous temperature to keep a basement at, im almost confident that it will stay high enough to not even need any of that.

I can imagine though that a little farther north and were talking stalling mycelium cold if not in a well heated house. Thats kind of the reason i put "incubating" in quotes... cuz im actually just turning the room into the so called incubator.

On the topic of temperature manipulation, does any need to be done to a midwestern home in the winter to properly fruit galindoi? (dont actually answer that just give me the proper fruiting temps)

Also ted idk if you were talking to me but i dont hide anything from my family that lives with me. I would hope no one does that kind of stuff to put their family at risk

Damn dude? Salt water? In a humidifier? No wonder your green houses get rusty so fast! :stoned:

My buddy has an outdoor saltwater pool and his deck railings rust pretty damn quick. having humid salty air definitely must speed the rust factor.

Why do you recommend the salt watre? Does it make it work better?

It's so humid here next year I want to do an outdoor greenhouse grow...conceal it from the neighbours and it would be so perfect

I only grew one tiny little outdoor pot this year... and I forgot about it the shrooms were half dried out by the time I found it (had a period of no rain)
