How people add water mid grow seems to be an area where the community is not in agreement. I have 3 gallons of cube substrate/spawn in a 28q underbed tote. I'm getting a 4 dried ounce first flush. but they look very dry. I am using 2.75q per 650 coir brick(coir alone). Squeeze, no drop. It seems plenty of people advise pouring a couple cups of water and try to get it under the sub, then pour it off 12-24 hours later.  basically like an old school dunk but with the surface drier. People also write that the sub only takes what it needs.

Is the current consensus that we only add tablespoons of water, for fear that one might over saturate?

I know that my tubs were too dry, I added a cup to my coir prep. I'll know more in a week.

Nah nah nah i cant speak on proper dunking. I cant speak of soaking and dumping water off.

What im talking about is a true bottom water, and probably isnt sufficient for a dunk. What im talking about is supplying each flush with just enough water to raise it to its full potential, and knowingly leaving out a majority of the water from the coir initially.

It gets done by injecting the substrate (or going in the side gap if the sub has shrunken enough) in a number of spots with an equal amount of water.

I dont think dunking mid grow should ever happen really but thats just my thought.

ahhh, gotcha. Years ago, syringes were rules out as a no no. How is it that you are succeeding at it? Are you just using the syringe to inject between the tub and the substrate?

Kinda figured.  All good, but really having issues on moisture.

Between that box of pans being too wet and these boxes being all side pins, im not finding a proper middle of the road with this.

well...
not to be a dick but there arent any fae holes on that shoebox...? put some on my dude. I thought i could do everything unmodified but its really not the case. It's especially not the case if you use an older coir recipe, which are super water heavy. Drier coir is better i think.

Add 6 1/4" holes in some sort of symmetrical configuration and dry up you substrate a bit and id bet youll see solid results. Just had to do the same  i really wanted to believe everything could be unmodified, and im finding that i can only my 3qt tubs, or 36l, unmodified. Everything else i do needs FAE holes (thats smaller than my 36l tubs)

Uhh.. don't?

Whenever I've had subs get dry dry they fail to colonize and usually mold.

I've never really had a problem with unmodded tubs for cubes(exotics & gourmets different story). 6qt shoe box up to 35qt tubs all worked fine.

What is an old coir recipe? It's been add boiling water for a while easy enough. You can simply add verm or squeeze coir to get proper field capacity if it's too wet.

Gotcha gotcha. Its not something im trying to add to my process because obviously its a weird, sadistic extra step. Im just trying to see if anyone else has had some promising results with bottom watering at the prime time, because in my experience bottom watering right after pinset is kind of beneficial. maybe not tho

And idk i was following franks cvg tek for a while without really testing my coir and was wondering why my tubs were coming up short as fuck. He called for 4qts water to 1 brick coir and 2qts verm which in my opinion is super heavy. I do 2 qts for 1/1 coir/verm.

ah i see what you mean. i think there's a formula some people use with ml per g or something since bricks are all different sizes that's more accurate. I just kinda eyeball it now and squeeze excess when it's done, gettin pretty close after a ton of tries.

While waiting for my agar to cool I cracked the lid a bit, as soon as I broke the seal there was a little hiss and the bubbles on top of the agar immediately disappeared. Was this air being sucked into the bottle or air being blown out?

I just do 660g coir to a gal of water instead of 650g.  any more coir and Ill get dry patches that refuse to colonize. my ambient temp is about 75F.  all of this is relevant to everyone's personal RH, and temp.  there's no definitive recipe/answer. just take any basic guideline/recipe and use observation and practice to dial it in to suit your needs

Has anyone ever added gypsum to their side watering/dunking water to further nutrients?

Or any other nutrient ?

I read somewhere that "fingering" in cube mycelia can indicate contams. This is what my golden teachers look like.... is this Okay?
