A.RichardTrickle said: So I have sucsessfully grown out a clean, fruiting culture on agar. Many thanks to everyone who I emulated to get this far. As a beginner with shaky agar skills where would you all reccomend I go with this culture from here? Is it absolutely nessecary I transfer the culture a time or two before using it to inoculate? Is it possible to just aspirate sterile nutrient water into the wide mouth half pint that the culture currently resides in and use it as LC? Any suggestions or teks to get me one step closer to clean spawn would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dick
If you really want a quick grow.
What I suggest you do is take 3 wedges from that culture to transfer to agar and drop 2 quarters into a sterilised grain jars. If you are clean with all 5 its a bonus. This way you can grow a quick cased grain grow and get a decent mushroom to clone. Then you really do have good genetics and will improve your yield when you move to bulk. The other 3 cultures can be expanded, turned to LI, LC, more culture ect........
Drop into jars first as u can clean up agar and the longer you are open the more chance of contamination

id make more transfers even if you fruit it out.
my first plate was really dirty(my fault most likely) and i took 2 cuts and agar-grain the main growth for a small g2g run. grow was bacterial and unimpressive. i didnt even fruit it.
after the 2 cuts grew i could tell how much cleaner they were just by looking.
good job on agar!!!!! cultivating becomes full circle. you are promoted from noob.

All thanks to you Josex! All the time I had your horror story in the back of my head so I couldn't believe the PC actually made it all the way here to the EU. I was more than relieved, to say the least.

Nope. None whatsoever. Well, I found a weird grey market site selling Presto 16 Qts for 250 euro but I decided fuck that. Anyway, that headache is over. The rocker is rocking right behind me.

Lookin' good? Looks cleaner than my previous spawn anyhow! WBS prepped using liloldme's tek. Think this way was much easier to get proper moisture content and no burst seed. The more colonized jars are KSSS clones, and the less are APE. Inoculated the same day, maybe 4 or 5 days ago using Munch's blenderless Li tek.

Thank you, sir. I have a feeling things are going to get very interesting from here.
I've got nothing but time, and my wife is out of town for two weeks so I have the kitchen all to myself. She gave me some rules as to how many more tubs I can buy as it is spilling over into the master bedroom already I'm thinking a flowhood build might be in order, she said nothing about that Dick

Make sure u add sime weight to the rocker by putting some coins on top and wrapping it all with foil.
Itll let u reach higher pressure and use much less water. A regular presto 23 will come close to running dry if u run it over 90 minutes with just a few quarts of water in it.
Also no more annoying noisy jiggle.

Wish this was part of my technique from the start as I always had trouble with tons of steam escaping and often not achieving a full 15 psi. Now with 2-3 quarters taped on, it sits at 17 with no noise and barely any water loss.
Ran them dry too many times and now have a couple warped pcs.

I only use two quarts and ive never come close to running my 23q dry. 120 min cycles too. I do like the idea of taping a quarter or two on though.
Btw the guage that comes with it really isnt too accurate. Mine shows a pound under what it really is (so i go by the weight rocking)

I'm sure just the standard weight(with minimal steam escaping) is sufficient but a bit more weight(higher psi) won't hurt especially with grains with high endospores.
edit: also just saw this

Tiamo said: I'm using my Presto PC now for the first time and the pressure dial gauge reads 14 psi while the pressure regulator is rocking. The dial does not want to go to 15 psi. Is my dial inaccurate? Is it a big deal?
Quote:
blindingleaf said: no its normal and not a big deal. the gauge on my AA with the rocker is actually totally busted, so all I have to go off of is the gentle rocking noise.
i hate the noise, so I probably end up cooking around 13PSI so it never rocks.
7-10 jars 2hours
2 bags 2.5hours (edit:unless they are really big, then 3 hours)

Yea. I don't think I want to fuck with the weight. I am scared enough of the PC already, feels like standing next to a bomb.
I am confident it is reaching 15 psi and the instructions say to add 3 Qt of water when canning. I don't think I even lost 1 Qt running it for 2 hours. Grain came out beautifully. Except for 2 warped PP5 containers. I'm guessing the lid got pushed on all the way due to the pressure and the pressure difference warped the plastic a bit. Oh well, next time I'll put the lid on even looser.

Is there any downside to raising the weight to let the pressure off so it'll cool quicker?

You will weaken and crack your jars. It can also cause your grains to dry out.

It will certainly weaken the metal over time.
