RE: Printing,

The small glasses covering the prints was never solid for me because it would just trap the moisture and I'd get a shitty print. The gills need evaporation to eject spores, don't they? I'd just use my SAB and cover armholes with a towel or spin it towards the wall.

i forget what i read about the natural spore winds, and if evaporation is required. wrt to moisture, i find it depends on what's printing. little bitty tamps need all the help they can get, so i mist the inside of the tub covering them. smaller pan cyans can have the same problem. but bigger pans, and pretty much any cube, are fine on their own. .. i recall someone stated they use individual jars and put a drop of water on each cap to provide moisture as it prints. i call that tedium in excess.

capping a jar with tyvek is interesting. definitely lets the moisture out.

Sorry, that shouldn't say they need evaporation to eject spores so much as the ability to draw the moisture in without getting too wet. I'm imagining caps in a closed off tiny cup/jar getting soggy/slimy, but have a small sample size of printing TBF. I just remember the early days when I tried printing in a small, enclosed space, I got shitty prints. Perhaps incorrectly, I assumed it was the moisture of the cap not really having anywhere to go and being too wet for the spores to eject properly. But in a bigger, closed off tub with the foil covering in a < shape, I got beautiful, thick prints. Could've been another form of user error, as well, since I was new.

Edit: I also am talking about cubes only, fwiw.

Has anyone else used damp hole punch dots sterilized and then swiped across a print? For something like cubes or wood lovers it will geminate and it's easy to transfer. But lots of contams have a hard time digesting lignin. I've used this with wild or dirty prints with success. It's an old technique from a book I have but it can give you the advantage. I just drop a bunch of them in a test tube and sterilize. Then when you grab one with tweezers and touch the print it goes back into the tube and several will start to colonize from it.

Lots of people do this with sawdust (or did) but I’m pretty sure that’s outdated. Kind of like the cardboard method. Agar accomplishes clean growth better, quicker, and easier than fucking around with direct MS inoculation via paper. Just my two cents. If I had a solid culture I may do that but even then I’ll just colonize a pint of grain and g2g

I totally agree. It is old school. It does work. But there's nothing that can't be done on agar. It's just another tool to have imo. When I was a noob it helped me get going with agar until I could develope some descent sterile technique. I haven't really used it since.

Yeah the g2g concept is similar, and I’m loving g2g since switching to regular mouth jars, idk why

I'm relearning liquid culture's. I used to do them a lot but it was always hit and miss. Looking back on it I know it's prob cuz I was squirting spores in the LC. I've got a nice one going now but after this I'll be doing g2g.

In that pic ^^^I did one with water and one with a drop of nutrient water. The contamed one shows what else was on that print. The one with just water stayed clean for the transfer.

Any canadians know a good place to buy bags? Should I buy from China? Is there somewhere in US that ships here?

I think I'm gonna try getting back into bags. Dealing with a shit load of quart jars is annoying AF. Plus I can fit more in a 23q presto per cycle if I use bags, right?

I've ordered from WTF mushrooms in BC but pretty expensive.  Unicorn will send right to Canada but shipping is terrible. Stuff like this I try to get sent to the border pick up then get when down there.  not everyone has this option though.  Sorry I couldn't help more.

Yeah I don't think they will let me across the border to pick up my stuff :ducklol:

I saw some on amazon, price isn't horrible but it definitely aint great. I got a shipping quote for bags from shroomsupply.com which seems to be the best option, since their bags are only $0.60 cents USD and on Amazon they are still $1.50+ CAD even at 100 quantity, it works out that shroomsupply will be my cheapest route so far.

I also like their premixed agar and the price isn't bad for that either so I think I'm just gonna order from them. Had good experiences in the past. Pretty sure they are shroomery sponsor, so that's always a bonus, fuck amazon

definitely fuck amazon.  They always jack on extra charges or get your cart all set up and find out after they don't ship to Canada.

They sent me 2 media bottles with no lids despite the picture having lids, even other peoples reviews had pictures of their product, with lids! Now I' mwaiting to hear back still because I guess it was a bigger issue than that customer rep could deal with.

Originally they just sent another one thinking there'd be a lid on it. Turns out their whole stock has no lids  And I know these bottles can be bought without lids, it just seemed really odd (and misleading) to have it in the picture, and review pictures, but not receive the lid or plastic ring. And now I have no idea what's going to happen. I hope they let me keep both bottles at least. It's been over a week since I heard from them.

Don't buy 1000mL media bottles (pyrex) right now from Amazon :cookiemonster:

Does anyone have a link for bag prepping? I’d be ordering filter patch bags and an impulse sealer, but....

I’m completely morally opposed to inoculating with a syringe. Could someone possibly link me to a tek that focuses on g2g from jars to bags?
My sterile technique is totally solid for jars and plates, but I have yet to successfully inoculate with a syringe, be it LI, LC, or MS. I’ve got g2g down, so I’d prefer to just do that if possible.
I’m sorry but I’ve been searching for hours and can’t find a solid tek.

I dont have a tek but its exactly like g2g with jars except your transferring to a bag. A jar can do 1 or multiple bags. Just make sure an iso wipe everything and dont forget tje gussets!

Okay sweet. Is zip tying usually sufficient or should I bring the sealer into the sab?

Also would still appreciate a tek on prepping and sterilizing bags if anyone is following.

Maybe Ill make one... if I ever have time.    I would just ziptie in the SAB.  I use mine for presealing and I still post seal but I always used to ziptie before I started presealing.  Having the sealer in ur SAB sounds like a PITA

I’m sure it will be. I think by the time I’m doing more than expirementing with bags I’ll have a FH. Should be ready in a week or so, so I’m just trying to get ready to scale up again. I wouldn’t do bags in a sab only just because I barely like working in my sab in the first place. I also have a feelin that my sterility is teetering a fine edge that I can’t afford to cross, but I may be wrong about that. Probably just paranoid.

They have 3rd party sellers for many items and also different fulfillment centers when Amazon is actually shipping it. So it's possible the seller you got just didn't have lids and another person's will.
