Obviously if straight millet is somehow cheaper than WBS then whatever, but this works for me when I want grain masters:

It's probably also worth noting that I strain the corn/sunflower seeds from my WBS so I only wind up with milo and millet.

Look at me go!

For reference, I clocked myself for 60 seconds of swirling my hand around and shaking the bucket. I started with 2000g of WBS and wound up with 815g of nearly all millet/milo. I did it again and got 830g. I'm sure you can find mesh screen already at the right size to just fall through if you're too much of a bleeding heart to savagely drill holes through a poor, innocent bucket and shake it a bit.

Edmunter,

That jar looks toast.

@stare millet in my city/town is 13 dollars per 50#. Im pretty sure 50# of pennington or whatever i can find is 19 something or even higher. This is certainly not true across the country or globe, but alot of the time white millet is cheap as a mother fucker.

@edmunter Nah, i use millet for masters and oats as receiving spawn. Unless i run out of oats, then the whole process just goes down on millet. I've been playing around with uncased tubs and just spawned 8qt total of millet, 4 in each tub, neither cased. So well see how they do

That's the stuff. Dont answer if u dont want, but do you happen to be in canada? There should be a feed store near you, i would suggest against ordering 25k bags online as it's going to cost a motherfuck in shipping. See if u can find a feed store near you, a place that sells horse and pig and cow food and im sure theyll have white or red millet.

Maybe it's the picture, but the growth looks wispy and weird like mold is in there. Can you upload a more clear picture? The shit looks dark grey to me.

Often times if you do a boiled water soak on wbs the floaters stay at the top and it’s easy to pour off. I would generally pour off and keep the rest in the wbs. The sunflower seed and small pieces of corn never gave me too much issue. I usually get Pennington’s finch seed which at the time was the cheapest and had the lowest content of sunflower seeds and corn available for the best price.

Even if you don't boil, its still easy to pour off floaters if you do a rinse. I dump it all in a big pot, fill with water, stir the seed up and the the floaters all come to the top. I mainly only get rid of floaters because they pour out with the dirty water... its the birds share, along with the nonfloaters that pour out  :birdfeed:

Hey y’all, quick question:
I don’t have the desire or means to do grain bags, but 40qts takes up a ton of fucking space...
I know I’d only cut my space usage in half, but...
Is there any reason I can’t use half gallon jars? Obviously up the PC time and use more spawn when g2ging, but are the dimensions prohibitive to our work or whatever? I gotta move away from qts of spawn I don’t have the space..

You can use them. I've never run the numbers though, so i don't know how much space it'll save.

I didn’t really run the numbers, but a half gallon is 2 qts. So if I used 6 half gallon jars would be the same amount of grain as 12. So it will probably just cut my spawn space in half, maybe 1/4. Won’t save much space but will make a big impact on time spent on the op.

They produce a bit more heat then a normal qt and you can't get as much grain in a pc per run

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn

Okay cool thank you. Obviously I can see for myself but I’m at work rn, do u know how many half gallon jars fit in the 23qt presto? I’d imagine it’s at least 7, which would mean there’s at least 2 more quarts than normal inside.

Thank you for the advice, I may try it with a germ plate Honduras culture that has finished up its qt of oats, I was going to test fruit it by itself but it’s a beautiful culture, and only a t2 so I know it’s got at least 1 strain that will fruit.

Never tried it but there is no way you'll get 7 in there. I'd guess 4
