Just needing to get full colonization and pinning, of course...
Many people, me included put the mix substrate straight into fruiting conditions. For some reason it makes the whole process quicker.
Your substrate not colonising or fruiting usually happens when the jars you expanding carry a contaminant.
Try this tek and you can find out if its you spawn or not

Regarding polyfill... Does anyone have an opinion or preference about siliconized vs. non-siliconized polyfill as an air filter for grain jars?
The siliconized one is only slightly more expensive, kinda like "big mac with bacon" vs. "big mac", so it's really no factor at all. I'm mainly curious which one is the one that's proven itself for well-established cultivators like @bodhisatta
(And yes I know that most people other than Bod will tell me "synthetic filter discs", but I need to ship those in from outside the EU, cut them to size, glue them on with silicone and whatev, and polyfill is local, cheap, and less fussy to work with. And if something is virtually free, I really don't need it to last more than one autoclave cycle.)

So the one you need doesn't absorb water. I'm guessing this means the siliconized version? You really can't go wrong with the poly-fil brand stuff. The pillow stuffing will absorb water and you dont want a wet filter. Some people get away with using regular pillow stuffing but it's not ideal.

So.... I just checked 3 tubs all spawned within 2 days of each other... and the last one i spawned is pinning.... Theyre all the same culture, is this almost certainly an indication of contamination? The top layer wasnt even colonized... Im pissed i had a whole 2 week allotment for fruiting and this asshole just starts pinning...
Ill post a pic in a sec

I'd shake it but i really don't think waiting a couple days will noticeably speed things up or slow things down. I wouldn't wait more than a couple days though unless you're out of fruiting room and need it to take it's time.

Flip it end over and and smack it horizontally against your palm at the end point of every 360 degree rotation.
I know that sounded like a troll but im serious its the best way to move something from the very top to the very bottom of a grain jar.

All 3 LC jars with this culture (It's PESH, multispore) have pins growing
I think they must sit long enough that the mat of mycelium on the surface becomes dense enough that it can form pins? I knew that it was possible but I have never seen this happen personally.
