I was cross hatch cutting the entire puck, turn it upside down above the recieving jar, and try to stab the little squares out into the jar.

If I am going to put an entire dish into a jar, I will sometimes cut a circle around the entire dish, or cut it into slices cross hatch like you say, and get the slices so that they are loose in the dish by kind of picking them up a bit with the blade. Then dump them into the jar, no stabbing required.

I like the curved blade. For me it makes it easier to pick up the wedge. But they are expensive so I will probably go back to standard blades.

Anyone else use #10 blades? I ordered some by accident a few years ago and haven't looked
back since. I find the #11's to be too stabby

The 10s are the ones that look like scimitars, right?

Alos, anyone have any reason to not recommend induction PC's? I want to get a temp controlled hot plate but i cant find one that isn't induction and presto came out with the induction PC a minute ago, any reason yall wouldnt use it? It's almost the same price as the regular, im about to return the one i just got and get the induction one+the induction hotplate.

EDIT: Im seeing a cadco food service hotplate with a standard coil element, which is what i use on my stove... Do these get hot enough? I've bout 4 hot plates and every one gets returned because it wont bring my PC to a boil, thats why im gunning for temp control... Is cadco sufficient? It says food service quality...

I just cracked open my first grain jar ever to spawn to a shoebox.  If I had to describe the smell, it was a very fresh smell, almost an earthy/slight metallic smell (it didn't really smell metallic but that's the closest common smell I could think of).  It was fairly strong.  Based off this shitty description, is this the smell of "fresh shrooms" people describe when opening and shaking their clean spawn?  Or am I smelling some other nasty funk that got in my spawn.  How would others describe the smell of their fresh, clean spawn jars/bags? Trying to build good habits and train the ol sniffer for going forward lol

Go to the store and smell some mushrooms. Seriously. Spawn should smell just like the mushrooms it will grow. It's a pretty distinct smell, and it's not uncommon to not be able to describe it. It just smells like mushrooms

Haha such an obvious answer but I didn't even think of that before  :facepalm3:  :facepalm3:
And yeah it's a distinct smell for sure.  I don't cook with mushrooms much so I guess you just gave me an excuse to run to the store quickly and throw together a dinner including some mushies.

I've only used #10s since I started using scalpel & I feel like its part of the problem I've had with wedges sticking to the blade because its too wide. The wedge has more space to slide up the blade and get stuck - but probably not an issue if you aren't using pasty plates.

Just completed a new batch of transfers and all the tips worked pefectly - thanks again! :mushroom2:

lol yeah i didnt like gourmet mushrooms before i ever tried the psilocybes and had no idea what mushrooms smelled like. In retrospect, i did, because im a frequent hiker and camper and have smelled them in nature before, but didnt realize thats what i was smelling. Now when im hiking i know theres something cool around when i smell that

If not it's totally cool but does everyone think it sounds fine to use induction for sterilizing? just thinking about how you shouldnt pastuerize on a gas stove, stuff like that.

Yeah I could see that being a problem with pasty plates, because it's best if you can get < 45 degree angle during
the transfer...otherwise shit slides around too much.

Good to change it up now and then. Dnt want to loose your ability to adapt. Life gets hard when that happens.

I really like this thread. This discussion bout scalpel blades has taught me that yall are maintaining a relatively tight sterile precedure, at least in comparison to mine.
I do the cutting through the wedge down into the recieving plate when i transfer. Works bout half the time.

Looks like my A2G process is way shitty. No wonder im having so many contam probs. My arms get fucked doing things that maticulous, so i slopped out my procedures. Gotta tighten back up. Ooo yea like it tight

What do you guys do with your agar plates after you pour them? Do you have to use them immediately or can you store them?

I've seen there are mason jars where you can directly put an oster blender attachment on and then put the ring on to the jar like with a normal lid. So basically the oster attachment replaces the lid.

I need that to "debug" something in my grow process. I have the suspicion, that one piece lids commonly available here in Europe are only usable a few times before starting to leak liquid or let mold spores in.

Are these jars in question wide mount pints? I'm not at my grow location right now, else I'd just measure the oster attachment out and compare that to mason jar sizes...

my widemouth pints fit the oster blender piece. Just remember you can't pc the plastic threaded oster ring, only the metal blade assembly and gasket.

I wrap them with saran wrap and store them in a tub.  They can last weeks, maybe months lol never tried that but as long as they are clean and don't dry out, you're good.  I tried not wrapping and storing in an ISO wiped tub but found some of them would get contaminated, wasn't worth it to me.

I have a tendency to let them sit in the sab for a day b4 wrapping them. I close off the arm holes so i can turn my ventilation back on. I also have a tendency to wrap them without wetting the sab or sanitizing my paws, so that cud also be where all this shit in my new plates is coming from.
