Yep, handle #7, blade #11, available on Amazon and eBay (usually in separate items for best deal). It's the same as this, but without the insane markup.
Love it, “Paul Staments Favorite Scalpel.” If this were an RPG, that’d be a unique weapon. +5+5 against moulds.

How can someone claim to fuck with this community and then sell a 95c scalpel for 20 dollars? Fuck paul stamets for that, i didnt know he was selling some bullshit like that... the flowhoods on his site arent even that bad considering they are handmade.

He sells chaga extract from mycelium grown on brown rice in a lab, chaga only contains betulins (triterpinoid/ possibly medicinal) when its growing on birch trees. He should know better and if he doesnt, I’m not sure which is worse lol....

Thanks for the tips guys. Really appreciate it & I'm pretty sure I get what you're saying. I have some transfers to do today so I'll give it a shot.
I was wondering about that scalpel also, looks way nicer than mine for myc purposes. I'm going to order one. I've been using the same scalpel I got many years ago from a spore depot xmas special with a #10 blade
My only other question is: I was thinking about turning the pasty plates sideways as I go in with scalpel so that I can get a better angle, and also avoid part of the handle being above the dish (since the pasty plates are taller and blade is too short). Would this be a bad idea?

Nope, its a great idea, especially if you’re working in a SAB, One of the TC’s(I think munchausen) uses them upside down IIRC

Thats my main qualm as well. Its not just chaga but all of the mycomedecinal products he sells. I cringe everytime I see someone buying one and tell them to look for whole fruit extracts
@ pixelpopper. Having the pastys on their side would be no different than a slant. Just make sure the agar isnt contacting the threads or junction where the lid seals to avoid possible contams

I have 11 handles and I PC them wrapped in foil in a jar and. I could use less handles if done properly as I can swap blades without contaming the handle, with a little finesse. If I cleaned and PCd my blades I could save a little, but I haven't thought of it till I read what yall been sayin.
I like Parafilm. Just keep it in a bag for storage and then do the same with wrapped plates. Keeps em moist enough to not crack.
You said it better than me quirk. I feel like were pretty similar in a way. I use one blade per dish. As long as im just transferring, and not salvaging, theres no issue using the same blade to touch the same culture.

He's not talking about cooling the agar at a slant, he's talking about holding the plate at an angle when transferring. And even if he was, that would be very different from a slant.
pixel,
I always tilt mine sideways when I use them. With one hand, I lift the lid and use it to cover the tilted body, then make a transfer quickly. Munch and others leave the whole thing upside down on an iso-soaked paper towel and lift the body off.

I kinda feel like going in at an angle is the better way to deal with high sides on a pasty plate for the reason you stated, less things over your agar to drop contams.
I couldn't imagine opening a new scalpel blade every session and not flaming. Both because it sounds wasteful, and because it there's a contam mistake somewhere along the line you will carry that contam onto every following transfer. I'll flame that same blade until it's rusty and falling apart(probably not ideal either but works so far).
Glad someone else enjoyed that nerdy af joke ted.

thanks again stare, now that you mention it I do remember Munch keeping the plates upside down & had considered doing that myself. Totally forgot about that idea.
I'm not sure I can do the one handed lid lift because the dishes I use are screw top. So maybe doing the Munch trick would work well for me.

Brass tacks, its because i havent noticed the cost yet. When i need scalpels at the end of this month and have to wait a day till i get paid, im sure ill PC a ton of them and reuse.
Also, just ordered the exact same item as seen on FP (#7 scalpel handle with 10 blades) on amazon for 8 dollars with next day shipping. Can we disown paul "shiester" stamets?

I just cracked open my first grain jar ever to spawn to a shoebox. If I had to describe the smell, it was a very fresh smell, almost an earthy/slight metallic smell (it didn't really smell metallic but that's the closest common smell I could think of). It was fairly strong. Based off this shitty description, is this the smell of "fresh shrooms" people describe when opening and shaking their clean spawn? Or am I smelling some other nasty funk that got in my spawn. How would others describe the smell of their fresh, clean spawn jars/bags? Trying to build good habits and train the ol sniffer for going forward lol

Ok i see, yall are one at a timing it with the agar slices. I was cross hatch cutting the entire puck, turn it upside down above the recieving jar, and try to stab the little squares out into the jar. Stamets?..dnt knw anything bout the dude. Looks like a arogent peenass though.
