I have a standard #3(ormaybe#11) scalpel handle, and i buy 2 or 3 100packs of gamma sterilized scalpel blades at a time. I know its not what everyone else does, but i really dont like the thought of leaving my torch running outside my sab. The blades are cheap, and i've done at least 300 transfers int he past 4 months with zero flaming (new blade for each plate) and naria contamination (due to the scalpel).

Wow, thats alot of blades. Id be speanding a small fortune if I went that route.  I buy those same blades but always flame.  Letting it cool on its own before cooling in the agar helps extend their lives

I do barehand agar work all the time but am absolutely religous with my alcohol wiping. I wipe between every transfer whatever the type of transfer being done is and my nails dont look like some peoples on here, lol.

Jesus what a waste of blades!

This is a post by me from 5 months back:

So last week I said I've been using the same scalpel blade for a couple years and
some people wanted to know if it was black and mangled. Well stareatclouds
was kind enough to send me a care package with a few fresh blades! Whoo! Being
lazy can pay off haha

Anyway here's a comparison between a really old and well used blade and a new one

Legit I feel like I've been through a lot with that blade. Hundreds of
plates and countless grows. All things must pass; Goodbye, old friend.

I put that new blade on right after that pic and this is it today

I'll probably use it another few months before changing it. If you fools are only using
your blades once or twice, send them to me before throwing away

The blade in the first pic grew many dozens of lbs before being replaced. Get ma damn
moneys worth thats for sure

I just use gloves.

My qualm with flaming scalpel blades, and in particular the ones we use, is they are not only meant to be disposable, but they are flimsy as fuck. After a few flames mine are ready to snap, and that coupled with the open flame led me to stop doing that.

How many times do you re use the blade? how many times do you think it's reasonably and practically acceptable to flame sterilize it, and how long do you wait for it to cool before touching the mycelium? surely the blade is still hot enough to damage the myc even a few seconds after flaming right?

Also, at 5 dollars per box of 100, im getting my money's worth.

I do truly believe that i should be reusing them, but whatever perceived benefit exists is outweighed by the real benefit of like 4 contaminated plates out of the 50 i have going right now. This is all just my experience, and im still new to this so i may come to the decision of reusing them sometime in the future.

I flame the ever living balls out of my blades. By five months my blade would not work properly at all. It may not even exist. I change mine... when i feel like it. It depends what I'm doing.

I have found that i like to use a newish blade for taking clone tissue. Old blades tend to cling to the tissue and make it a pain in the ass too remove.

I've also found that Old blades that have been flamed over and over again work quite well in a "josex" poke sorta way.

Exactly my sentiment  with regards to the cloning

Thats probably because theyre dull as hell and can't make a clean cut and pulls the tissue with it. Which actually sounds kind of nice, but the sharpness of a brand new blade is an unmatched feeling

Has anyone ever used something like this for taking clone tissue?

I just bend mine back into a slight curve facing the handle the 1st time it bends off
and then flame it til its basically tempered. Legit the blade i just posted is
sealed to the handle in that position.

I have used the same blade for literal YEARS at a time and never had it dull so
bad I couldnt cut a culture and thats working with edibles and meds also.

really?

at $10/100, scalpel blades cost what, half to parity what one disposable petri dish costs? people don't bat an eye at tossing those by the dozen. how can anyone be criticized for treating blades precisely the same way? and blades have the added advantage of being perfectly, 100% recyclable.

Haha yeah 30 drinks minimum to keep the hands steady

Right on yeah I need to make a couple of those tubs and test em out .. been sorta lazy and just not feeling it because of all the grain issues but I believe I solved everything for good now .. it was a mixture of bad grain and faulty pressure gauges ..

So i am cranking shit back up hoping to have a bomb ass new year Haha i hope they put out some fatties for you
