Are you looking at the right one? The one on the left is newer, right is older. The one on the left seems solid all the way through... though that is assuming I'm seeing condensation and not some other mycelium.

Not always the case to grab immediately: if I've a satellite bacterial colony near center, and the culture is obviously growing faster, I'll mark the back of the plate under the colony, and allow the mycelium to grow further out from it before transfering... DON'T WAIT WITH OTHER MOLDS...once it sporelates, hang it up and toss it out
Short answer, you CAN get lucky and outrun shit: it's up to you to use your judgement which approach to take in a given situation
The 2 black bits are where I transferred away already. Its a low nute mix to let the myc expand quick but you might be right. i have loads of nice culture though.....

Do they make paint strainer bags that large? I have 2 8gal kettles with bazookatube strainers that I use so I dont buy bags anymore but all sorts of yeast culturing equiptment is great for lc stuff. And they have parts for home engineered stuffs like steamers.

Yeah, i know they need more work, personally by looking at it i dont feel that mycelium is clean or strong enough.
I was asking because i may not be able to make a transfer until sunday. And given that there is no visible contamination i feel like there should not be much of a problem making them wait a little.
And then the question popped up in my mind. Cause those plates dont clearly show signs of contamination, only weak mycelium. I wanted to know if in these cases (in comparison to serious contamination with visible bacteria or mold) with no visible signs of contamination one could be less strict with transfer times

When making up a bag to make a block for growing woodlovers, can you use fresh woodchip with the leaves and twigs in it? My friend is a tree surgeon and I can get plenty. Otherwise I have a small chipper that could make small prepared small branches.

Oh, yeah, Sunday should be fine, as long as you have a "leading edge" visible you're good. You don't want to let it hit the edge of the plate.

Not sure if I should just make a separate thread for this but:
How do you guys go about growing in cold temps? My apt in the winter literally is below freezing... should I buy / make some sort of tent? Space heaters? Take a break?
Would I be able to keep doing agar work at all in these temps? Thnx

I found out after last winter that you can still grow colder... but anything below 60F seems to really mess with things. From March-April temps inside my house were down into the low 50s/high 40s. Not literally freezing, but I'd wake up from it in the middle of the night.
If you're going to heat your space use radiant heat sources, not heating elements on fans. You don't want hot air blowing around.

Not sure, I have ones that comfortable fit in my 5 gallon HD buckets and that's good enough for me.

Hello folks. I have been using PF Tek for a few years now and the next batch will be a bulk substrate.
Ill use Coco Coir and Verm. mixed for substrate and use 6 lbs. of Milo as my grain inside a 64 qt tub.
Do I have to sterilize my substrate? Or, once the grain is fully colonized do I not have to worry about contamination anymore?
Also, are these two things the only 'ingredients' I need? Ive watched a few videos on the web where people are throwing 5-6 different things into their sub.
Thanks for the advice. I started to create a thread, but i figured it wasnt worth it for such a simple question.

You do not, sterilizing is unnecessary and likely to make things more complicated. Once the grain is colonized, correct, it's contam resistant. I recommend looking up Bod's Bucket Tek.

I only use coir As above, check bod's tek You got this. It's so easy after the grain is colonized.

Hey, do yall use something to bust up coir in the bucket so when you pour in the boiling water it gets to everything?
I been winding up with fat chunks of raw coir after an hour or so of bucket tek. I use about 350 more grams and a few more qts of verm cuz the big tubs, but i use more water too so..
Breaking it up by hand is not gonna work for me. Got a drill. Maybe i get one of them paint mixing attachments to shove down in there right after i pour water in the bucket.

I set an alarm to go off after it's been sitting an hour in the hot water. Just stir it up at that point and you'll be good to go

I do this. Verum showed me this trick. My drill sucks, but does enough to help. A powerful drill is necessary.

If i dump boiling water onto a solid brick, let it sit for at least an hour, its very very very easy to break up by hand at this point. It basically just crumbles without effort. Its pretty hot still, but wearing gloves is enough to get it done.
