Oats are the easiest to prep and hold tons of water but they have a very high endospore count. I PC oats at least an hour longer than wheat. Befor I started PCing them longer my contam rates were through the roof with oats.

For how long do you pc oats? Reading your post I think I'm going to be doing wheat or rye then.

I am trying wheat right now. It seems like it colonizes not as fast as rye. I do not have enough comparisons to proof it but it is my first impression. I prepare wheat the same way like rye.

"learning" this exact thing is what caused me months of failure and frustration because i believed the reason i was failing was because of a high sporeload that was getting in my tubs during spawning, when obviously the real reason was bad spawn (even though they looked and smelled fine)
i finally learned that contams can hide in spawn even if the jars seem fine, and i've since then started working with agar (ty pasty <3) and tightened up my sab game, but i would've started agar a long time ago if i didn't keep reading that a high sporeload will fuck all your future grows

A high sporeload being able to fuck your grows is exactly why you should start agar sooner though. Anybody will tell you, if you ask them, that if a tub is failing before the first flush it's bad spawn. A high sporeload doesn't make any of your work easier though. A good few people here will be able to testify that growing got more difficult the more they let certain shit slide. You ever hear about people having continuous battles with one contam in particular? Sometimes it can be environmental but whatever the case, growing mold increases your chances of growing mold in the future, and that's pretty well established. The solution? Toss it if it's mold. Something you had to have heard quite a few times as well. Anything that's not clean and healthy should really be tossed because it all just invites more disaster in the future. Yes it sucks throwing stuff away that could in theory produce mushrooms still, but it's for the future of growing, and at one point you really won't be hurting for more yield. If something isn't adding up and you feel afraid to do something everyone else is doing for one reason or the other, just ask questions, you might look ignorant for a second but you can save yourself a ton of time. Sometimes the different pieces of information just haven't clicked together yet, but almost always, the solution to a mycology problem is actually dead simple.
That said, I'm sure if you were a good enough grower it wouldn't really matter where you were growing. Still, it's no help to anybody to just let mold run wild and sporulate all over the place.

In case anyone else cares to try milo.... This is red milo, there are other variants and I am not sure of how those grains would react to same treatment. It expands twice in this prep and I have very low contams so far.
Rinse, remove floaters. Add to stock pot/PC. Handful gypsum Bring pot to boil. Cover, remove from heat, soak 1 hour. I strain through window screen on my deck, could be done in tub or sink and allow to steam dry. Jar it up. PC 90 mins and done.

They don't hydrate as evenly as the other ones. Isolating them from the others is a good idea but it doesn't mean they are useless. I like to forcibly submerge the floaters somehow in a separate pot and soak, and put them in their own pint or qt jar. They colonize fine.

i appreaciate your response thank you for making it clear <3
you're right about starting agar sooner, my entire problem came from me not accepting that my spawn was dirty ("it's all white, colonizes 100% even after a shake, and smells fine, it can't possibly be my spawn!")
this in combination with reading that "high sporeload will fuck your future grows" led me to assume that the sporeload was the problem, so i spent money on hepa filters thinking that would solve my problem (since i couldn't just move to a new house)
when every single tub still turned green, i did more research and finally learned that contams can simply be hiding in your spawn without ever showing up until you go to fruit, and that agar is the only way to guarantee clean spawn
i threw out all the rest of the quarts i had from g2g, started agar a few weeks ago, and i'm finally waiting on a couple master jars that have been tiger dropped
hopefully i'll have some fruits to show for it all in a couple weeks. even though i haven't seen a single contam on any of my agar, there is a part of me that's still scared my tubs are just going to go green again since that's all i've seen for months
god bless the shroomery
