   Could that be done to salvage this poor guy? I got this and refunded but didn't have to send it back to eBay guy so it's just sitting here still. It would be pretty convenient to patch it up and make it work. Perhaps I could construct the whole FH so as to be able to replace the filter fairly easily in case this unit doesn't cut it.

I’ve never done it but believe I have seen pics or read about it on here of people doing so. The metal can be meticulously reformed with tweezers or forceps and the filter material patched with calk or glue.

the slits on this pic are too big , i know , but i doubt that's the reason

They’re straw bags. As long as the slots are few and small, they allow for gas exchange. Typically, you punch holes every 3 inches.
