my last batch of dishes are 10/10/500 LME I think the random colonies on the blank dishes are due to poor lid fitting (no pours in deli containers warping a little in PC) leaving them exposed to contams. The transferred plates I guess I have no excuse other then poor SAB tech on my part
I've been very lazy with myco work, have a couple germination plates I've neglected and a handful of others that are in need of transfers. Tonight Ill find the willpower to sit down and get it done (carefully*)
Quirk- I just wish it was like a $40 solution lol all them units are pricey

Scrutinize everything really closely. I had an issue once where myc was growing really weird on agar or outright not growing or even disappearing off the plates, random mold and bacteria colonies showing up sometimes in strange patterns and jars going green.
Turned out to be damn near microscopic mites. If you have houseplants they are most likely harboring mites and that could be a problem.
Most likely just poor technique but hey I'm just putting it out there.

Unfortunately, that's the long and short of it. The higher temps definitely don't work in your favor, but if your technique is good, and you transfer enough to guarantee no contams are riding along, you shouldn't be having many more problems than usual. Having said that, a few vets/TCs have said some people will take a break from mycology work in the summer due to running into higher contam rates, like yourself.

Good luck. If I were you I'd make a batch before you need it and leave some out at room temp for a week or 2. I've had rotten luck with garden blocks molding(without spawn) on it's own. Pasteurizing helped a bit, but it was a constant problem until i stopped using it.

I seen that at Walmart and was wondering if that would be an issue. Test it out and let us know. I think I'm gonna stick with the ECO brand but they stopped carrying the three pack here and only have loose coir in a bag 😡😡😡

you can get a case of eco online for about $60. I think it's like 12x 3-packs.
/e checked, it's 8x 3-packs, so 24 bricks.

I found some for $11 for a 5k block, plus I like that I can pay in cash
Question: I want to reduce my use of plastic, and I've been using garbage bags for liners. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives? Was thinking of using parchment paper
I guess the answer is to just go without liners, but I like to lift out my sub to harvest.

I would say float your sub, but that only works for unmodded tubs.

Yea, I'm team unmodded. A preference thing for sure, but I think why make a mono if unmodded works fine. Shoeboxes FTW.

Unmodded tubs are difficult to dial in here. I live in a desert, highest humidity is during the mansoons, maybe 30%. If I leave an unmodified tub open just a bit, it'll dry out super quike. If I keep them shut, not enough fea. With a standard 6hole monotub, I don't have to mess around with them.

I also live in the desert and don't really have that problem.
