A couple of my PEU mushrooms turned black and smell like gym socks. Should they be thrown away?

i rinse after the boil and it seems to help a lot to get rid of that starchy look all over the jar , i had that very bad cause the quality of my wheat grains suck , i like washing the gypsum off or coffee if i use it , when i rinse i look at the water and it's super murky even without the gypsum or coffee , i just stop when i see clear water coming out , maybe that'll help and it's super easy
I like to rinse after the boil, too but I will do it with boiling water. So when I prep grains I'll have two pots going...one for the grain and one for the rinse. I use milo and that shit can get starchy.
This isn't an option for me so I clean before boiling to remove bran.

post a pic. Those "truer" peu genetics look like they get blueing caps kinda like ape does.
The smell is a bad sign for the substrate, but your fruits could still be fine.

Maybe you can eat around it? Or make sock tea?

Yuck.

Picked them and immediately put them in a dehydrator overnight. Its only the blue/black ones that smell funky

Can we get a thread started with old outdated cutivation merhods used in a side by side comparison to the accepted methods. Like cold shocked vs non cold shocked. Scratched vs not. Etc. Im just thinking these would be cool to see side by sides of. Im talking all outdated methods incubators, grows kept in dark you know the way it was done years ago. I would take the initiative but im not growing anymore and wont be for awhile unfortunatly. I just think it would be a fun oroject the community could work on together. Or maybe im just thinking out loud.

I think it would be fun to work on this project! Even if you're not growing if you could put together a thread that listed the shit that you want to see tested side-by-side that would be helpful.
For example, I don't really know bad techniques like scratching (wtf?!) because I've only been cultivating for a little over a year now. If you put a thread and people offered to run experiments like this side by side you could just cultivate it. Someone needs to do that work too

Id definitley be willing to put work in too. Most of these methods are before my time in cultivation but im currently reading a book with some very outdated info that made me think about this. It talks about building gloveboxes, incubation, scratching, growing on popcorn, cold shock etc. Although this book is about edibles and gourmets so some of this may be relevant to other species im not sure.

I don't have a favorite because I use what is available, but I have been wanting to get some beach sand, rinse it really well and try it out, it's a beautiful white quartz sand. It's the only non nutritive thing I could think of that is plentiful and easily obtainable.

The PEU variety I go regularly turns blackish after it goes through the greenish/blue cap phase
Does it look like the ones here that are turning dark?

I've noticed some of my PEU tends to get bacterial infections too if left too long in humid environments, worse than other cube varieties I grow
But those ones that have the darkened caps that smell really mushroomy are still good. I would only be worried if you saw something like pseudomonas cause you don't want that spreading in your grow area

That does sound like fun. Could make a list and have people volunteer for each grow.

Curious about this myself. I have LED bulbs in some of my lights now, like CFL replacement type bulbs but I want to upgrade to lighting strips for my shelves. Right now some tubs don't get as much light as I'd like
Anyone know if these are good or if there's better ?
I thought about fluorescent tube lights too like a T8 or T4 or whatever but....this seems cheaper
Anyone use only LED strips?

And most importantly, they're not shit and dont break easily at all. I get the 5 mil $8 for 100, but I have gotten the 7 mil which are $10 for 50 which you can reuse endlessly.
I don't have that residue problem with the ones from HF
Code 24609687 for $2 off the 7 mil gloves RN. Also, do we have a constant "Mycology Deals" thread around here? It'd be sweet to have folks update threads with best deals on various shit.
