Another random questions. On some of my agar plates, the ones I placed an agar wedge on, the mycelium is growing but immediately around the wedge it appears transparent and then grows radially outward some distance from that. Is that normal?

Last week or so I posted a pic of some unused coir that had gone moldy. Some folks said to just sterilize it again and try to reuse so I put it in my pc for 4 hrs and spawned.
This is what it looks like today

Tub blew up in mold unfortunately

Again, pictures are worth much more than your explanation... a clear leading edge can be super aggressive colonization, or could be a bacterial colony growing just out in front... which would make more sense with your jars as bad as they are while on the drier side... lemme see man! Lol, the morphology of the culture behind the clear is what I'm after

For a alcohol lamp I bought a jar of baby food and used that and a wick from a oil lamp. Works good, the lid doesn't screw on like it should from being heated so many times. But works great.

what kind of grains? For oats it hasn't seemed to be a problem for me, but I get them pretty dried out on the exterior before pc'ing.
How heavily you want to pour might also be a factor?

fairly incredible coir cooked at pressure for four hours could harbor anything living. sorry man, that sucks.
next time, gamma rays.
edit: or maybe there's something else with the coir that's nutritive for spores from the air. like, something different about it that has nothing to do with something in the coir, but the coir itself is more prone to contamination for some reason.

It's so easy for me to get discouraged and impatient with growing stages. I have some trays in the fruiting chamber that are 100% and they don't seem to be doing anything. They dominated the bulk substrate within days and after that nothing. Good news is I have something in all stages of growth.

Run it through sterilization and spawn in bags... sterilized anything is prone to contamination... I theorize also that cooking the coir breaks it down a bit and makes it much easier for secondary decomposers to get at it... might be dealing with increased sporeload... with the weather change... any contamination let go inside?

I use 10-15mL per quart jar, I prep the wheat the same as i do for agar to grain....but I do let it dry pretty well after the simmer.

I was told my bag was possibly bacterial but people seemed to think i should continue with my shoeboxs. I made 2 shoeboxes with my colonized grain bag into coir. They seem to look ok, what do you guys think? Are they ready to fruit yet?

They will fruit when they're ready... leave them shut for a better pinset/ more "set and forget " experience...
Does look a bit bacterial IMO, but will likely fruit: just be patient... walk away, burn one... for 3 days!
I know it's tough, but my best looking boxes get very little/if any attention... clean spawn and field capacity coir is all they need... can usually get away with misting only once before first flush harvest...

Update your sources as practices evolve rather quickly and bad habits develop easily
12/12 lighting has been shown beneficial to mycelium through all stages of growth from spore to spent... plates, jars, tubs, 12/12 on/off from day one til trich rears... DON'T INCUBATE EITHER! 68-70 room temp is perfect... ambient light is fine, though some cultures do perform better with direct lighting... not such a concern for dishes and jars... my working agar cultures are stacked 8-10 deep and just sitting on a shelf in the kitchen near the beast (my hood) they dont seem to suffer from not being on a single layer, but NEVER in darkness... this also increases favorability of conditions for contaminants IMO...

Iβve used ambient window light just fine. As long as you get some kinda light Iβve noticed it doesnβt matter much. 12/12 is good, but give or take a little and it should work out just fine IME.
