Can I use the heating element on my stove top to sterilize my tools for cloning? I dont have a torch on hand and I was planning on putting my sab on my kitchen counter beside my stove.
You can't.
Build an alcohol lamp out of a spare wide-mouthed jar and a wick. It's what Mycologist217 has been using for years and unlike a torch or lighter it allows you to keep both your hands free while you handle, well, pretty frikken hot equipment, which is always a plus.
Why not exactly?
Kitchen is fine guys... SAB functions on principle of it's name (still air) regardless of where it's sitting...
Ibu, those jars are super wet (not according to the tek) and crazy bacterial... you can see how the "condensation" is thickening up like snot? Not just water... also note how the culture looks matted and thick... telltale sign of bacterial infection IME... I'd start over and dry your oats MUCH better
I shake right after SAGARI drops
Hm. I dried them for a few hours in about 4-5 different strainers. There was no moisture in the jar when I put them in there, it only showed up after the temp dropped in the room by about 15 degrees then got warm again. But dang. I have plenty of other jars lying around so I guess Iβll just wait and see how these smell if/when they finish and prep some new jars in the meantime. Thanks for the advice.
These were the jars day of inoculation, fwiw. There was like a drop or two of water at most. Sorry for bad pic.

I dry overnight, spread out... want the outside of the oats completely dry... can also fan dry in a few hours: just be sure to mix thoroughly fairly often so you have consistency

Yea, I spread them out before tossing them in the jar and they didnβt really leave any moisture behind on a paper towel so I thought they were good. Iβll get them more dry for my second attempt, still have plenty of agar to pick from and some new varieties plated. Weβll see what happens with these I guess.

Take a grain out the bag and put to agar. See what happens other than that I'd guess unseen bacteria.

Right on. Thanks for the insight! Iβll work on getting more jars going sometime this week and see what shakes out. I also wonβt fill them as much, hah.

Hey Caps, you think if I shook these jars itβd be beneficial? If they donβt recover toss βem and if they do keep em?

One of the main reasons for the shake is to see if the culture is healthy/recovers in a timely manner... after a while, you'll gain an eye... I shake initially, and around 15% if it's uneven, or looks fucky... otherwise, the SAGARI acts like an LC, and a clean, healthy culture will colonize evenly, with no need for a shake... best to be working with a proven culture without contamination for a bit before rakong the "no shake" approach IMO though

You think I should shake them again then? They recovered within 24 hours from the first two shakes (once after some mycelium had colonized grain then again at 30%)
Edit; oops just saw your gif lol. Iβll give them a shake in the morning. Iβm tired hah

You've not shaken very well (they're full I know) or there's practically standing water in the bottom... likely riddled with bacteria... I edited the last post with more info as well... I'd start something fresh just in case

Thanks for the wisdom! Just got it in my head to shake them all up. I accidentally dropped a jar and it exploded. The good news... it only smelled of mushrooms. So maybe a win? Everything has had the shit thoroughly beaten out of it so weβll see. In the meantime Iβll whip up some more grains so I can get some more jars going.
