i have updates to make yet, but this little investigation has taught me a lot about a lot. too many confounding variables to say anything definite, but i have gotten several zos dry from this experiment and so far only one of the six has contaminated. several of the others are currently mid flush with some fruit that look like decent clone candidates.
my informed opinion on the matter: try not to wait longer than necessary, but cooked jars can go weeks at least, as long as they were properly processed. if you're risk averse or have precious few cultures ready for grain, cook more jars. if you'd rather not waste the effort and the grain, noc them and see.

Can I use the heating element on my stove top to sterilize my tools for cloning? I dont have a torch on hand and I was planning on putting my sab on my kitchen counter beside my stove.
Can't answer your stove top question but I can't imagine it's very effective unless your SAB is right beisde it or something but kitchen SAB is just terrible practice anyway. Kitchen is terrible spot to attempt any sterile work.
As for torches, Canadian tire has a kick ass butane torch that comes on sale from like $50 to $12 often, check the flyers...it's blue
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/iroda-pt-200-butane-torch-0587503p.html
That's the one, I've used mine for years. Amazon is decent place to check too if you do't wanna wait for a CT sale.
It goes down to $12 like 5-6 times a year at minimum tho so if you keep checking you'll see it drop
Thanks for the heads up. My kitchen is pretty much my living area lol really small house. its either that or my bed room/ bathroom. figured the kitchen was better but im probably wrong.
Hopefully I can barrow a torch from a friend till I can make it to town or the cloning might have to wait. tomorrows my only day off this week was hoping to get it done lol
Edit: just saw the lighter comment, might have to try it and hope for the best.

@staytrippy
I figure they got dollaramas in BC yeah?
Dollarama has butane torch lighters for $3.50 if you're in a pinch and have some change lying around. They just aren't the best quality but they will work. I say that cause they are intended to light cigarettes and such not constant use like mycology but it should work temporarily.
A bic would work but that lighter fluid is filthy and usually leaves some gross residue and butane will get it hotter faster

Should work fine... I don't suggest flaming inside the SAB, so will be in and out: with 8-10" armholes, fluctuations should be minimal with smooth movements... it's a still air box, not a sterile air box, set it up next to the stove, heat the blade red hot, and get your hand back into the SAB without disturbing the air near the bottom of the SAB much... elevating your work will help, as well as laying a towel down to create a tighter seal around the base... set up, let the air settle while the eye heats up, and give it a whirl! Clone tissue plates are rarely clean anyways, get a torch man! Really not expensive
Headband, depends on how bad it is... could indicate excess moisture as an underlying issue, causing symptoms of insufficient FAE due to a lack of evaporation... some varieties/strains are bad to get fuzzy feet, which don't really concern me until they start climbing up the stipe...

I put agar to grain about 3 weeks ago today. Most of the jars are about 80%. I also definitely overfilled the jars. Does this seem reasonable amount of time for colonization? The grains come up to about the bend, maybe an inch of empty space for air.
I think I check on them too often to really notice the myc growing haha.

Ibu, got a picture? 3 weeks is a good bit, but it could be slowed/stalled for a variety of reasons including (but not limited to) too wet, too dry, or contamination

Here are some photos of some of the jars. The temperature has been fluctuating a lot, the condensation didn’t appear until one night where it got to be like 62 in my house because it got super cold overnight and I had the AC on (having to turn on the heat in May is just silly). Let me know what you think. The grain was prepared according to Bod’s Tek and the agar wedges came from a couple transfers of cloned tissue.

What's up with you guys not wanting to shake man shake those jars Haha like 5 days ago.. this one is a little early but I am going to shake it now .. if the myc is healthy it doesnt matter if you shake it once or 3 times I mean it's better to only shake it once but . You have more of a chance of those grains getting bacterial before the myc can consume it the longer you wait to let it colonize

You can't.
Build an alcohol lamp out of a spare wide-mouthed jar and a wick. It's what Mycologist217 has been using for years and unlike a torch or lighter it allows you to keep both your hands free while you handle, well, pretty frikken hot equipment, which is always a plus.

I shook those jars twice. Once initially after the mycelium crept off the agar then again at 30%. Should I shake a third time?

Well, I leave for 6 days and all ya'll do is talk about bags? Sheesh, bunch of nerds.
Honestly, I've been too scared to try bags, mostly because of the cost. I feel like petri's are already the one disposable item I buy in bulk, so having both petris and bags sounds like a lot of buying things over and over... but also gives you more space in the PC to work with.
