Iβll take pics next time. But I put 6 bags total, two bags and two tall half pints per layer, I use jar rings under the trivet, but not between bags or bags/cooker. The bags have a space between them on the short side of the bag, into these spaces I put the half pint jars. My thought is it fills the space the bags would expand into and pop, and it also provides more mass so the cooker cools slower.
Never tried tape or rubber bands or anything?

How am I hitting that temperature when I don't run out of water and stay below 17 PSI?

Good question. Maybe you were really low but not out of water? Do you use an electric stove or a propane burner or gas stove?

last night I had two 4.5lb fruit blocks and 3 grain bags w/12 cups in each bag. It was a bit of work getting it all in. (btw I put a trivet bottom and top to prevent pressure release from getting plugged) I got the AA fired up, vented and pressurized and it started making a sound I never heard before and didn't like. I brought pressure back down to zero and took a bag out, worked good, no more freaky sound, almost a whining. (yes "freaky sound" is the scientific term for what was happening)
Maybe the weight thing is an issue Aye, also, are you using filter patch bags? How are they folded? Are you depressurizing slowly? I'm curious to know why they are popping too.
Disclaimer, I am not an expert! I am fairly new to bags but learning lots as I go.

I use an electric stove. I have rings on the bottom and then a trivet to elevate the bags to fill more water. I think I have enough water, but I've never heard any metrics on what I need or anything.

If you have at least a half inch or maybe 3/4" of water in the bottom after you are done it should be plenty I reckon. Any less than that might not be enough of a heatsink to keep the sides from getting hot.

I am very sure I have that left over easy, but I'll be sure to check next time. There's tons of variables that could account for this and the sample size is small. I'll revisit this when I run more bags later. Thanks for the helpful info, man. Appreciate it!

If you ever have that issue again I would like to see some pics of it. I'm sure we could figure out what is going wrong together. I am confident that lining isn't necessary though.

I just let the bottoms of my bags sit in a bit of water in my PC's. I literally don't understand how they r popping. I do 17-20psi 2.5 hours with a 15 minute vent on a presto.
You should usually put some kinda weight on the bags. It makes them seal real nice.i noted this when running my steamer the top layer of bags never sealed right. Just took a pp 55 gallon lid and put a 25 lb weight on it.
I've done everything you say will pop bags with large success (unless i missed something)
I also do use sleeves with my bags they get transferred in and out of rooms before being knocked. Take a little extra time and not risk it.
Aye dark grains aren't that big a deal.. my quarts are very dark this last run and they look great and recovered within 24 hours.

Not sure if you're purposely responding to me, but my bags don't pop. I suspect the top level gets tiny pinholes which let in mold when they sit around waiting to be noc'd. I use a heavy plate or 2 on the top level, but have suspected I could use something heavier. I'll get it figured out.

It was fairly general.
If your bags seal fully along with the filter I could see it but it would have to be so before the bags expand. I don't use anything heavy just a light pp plate I have laying around they don't crack like my other ones.
Are you sure it's just the top layer? Are you taking them out hot?
Are you using shitty bags? (no offense)

The only time my bags popped was trying to go without a Tyvek sleeve was per a Tek on here. I use a plate on top. Not 100% it's always or only the top layer, but the top layer bars look worse.
I don't take them out hot, but it's possible I didn't wait long enough before. But that still wouldn't account for mold in the bottom would it?

Nah taking them out warm shouldnt cause those pinholes in the bottom corners. I think there may have been a manufacturing error on some Unicorn bags last year or so I heard about through another grower. Perhaps you just had some bad batch of bags that weren't made right.

@star eat clouds
I'd assume bad bags.
Wherever the molds grows is a great indicator of where your problem is.
Ie mold on top grains of jar filter/ lid failure. Or in your case a small hole on the bottom of the bag.

Had a few drops of a spore syringe left of a variety that never terminated on grain. Put it to agar. Is this looking ok? I made some transfers of other things the same day and have one transfer that grew some cobweb, so wanted to see your opinion on these. Also played some spore swabs that havenβt shown any life that same day.
These are 2 of the plates growing something from the spore solution. PR variety.

Thatβs what I was thinking. Literally had a few drops left in the syringe so glad to make much of anything. Should I just keep eyes on it over the next couple days?

I'd probably take a transfer from the first plate. Just incase it started to get funky in there
You could wait to try and target faster growth but I would just worry about getting a clean transfer for now.

Right on. Iβll make a transfer or two from the first plate tomorrow morning. Thanks for the advice! Hoping the spore swabs germinate soon (not pictured). Thatβs a KSSS and I hear they grow viciously haha.
