Potato flake agar, grain water, and now um using MEA Potato flakes I always did for 45 mins. Grain water I started messing with times a little. Went to 30 mins, and that's the time I'm using for MEA.
I also sterilize my media bottle all buy itself in a 41.5 quart cooker.
Oh and I keep it at 15 psi
I hear what your saying. I guess maybe it's not such a issue when your PC ain't packed full. And it being a liquid
Ans I pour a SHITLOAD plates. Been through 3 boxes this winter plus I still have a box of 150mm plates. I need to buy more 100mm. I'm down to like 55 plates left

I make mostly PDA, a longer time is a good idea.
I don’t pre sterilize my jars for myco work, I do for canning food though.
interesting on not venting. I guess sterilizing your jars and the agar is boiled first too would make a difference.

Oh I think maybe u misunderstood me. I dont pre sterilize the bottle before making anything in it. If that's what u thought I meant.

Venting has nothing to do with liquid boil over so why in the world would you skip a vital step just because your sterilizing liquids?

Yea venting has everything to do with interior temperature, the air will not even be very hot for a good while if you don't vent.

Liquids sterilize insanely easily. It's not a hard ass grain. Has nothing to do with boil over..
Just laziness.

Yea but air doesn't sterilize and keeps you from hitting sterilization temperature. Once sterilization criteria is met liquids do sterilize fast.

That's not lazy that's retarded. Lazy is not doing something that takes work. Retarded is not doing something that literally takes no extra work because you're already doing the work part. You just need to do the work the right way. Lazy doesn't make sense to me when you spent the time making agar and getting your cooker out and on the stove.

I wonder how ppl turn on the pc..
I always leave the weight off, turn on high, wait for boiling/steam to escape then I toss the weight on(for agar. i always vent 10min for grains)
Do some people just put the weight on cold crank up and get to psi?

Pretty sure you're always supposed to vent.
-------------------- But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow That it's one thing to try and another to fly You get there quicker just a step at a time It's one thing to bark, another to bite The show ain't over till you pack up at night

For sure. But I dont think doing something I started from the beginning and had it work pretty consistently. Then have it all of a sudden being the problem. Im probably explaining that wrong but. I think you get what I'm saying.
I'm not telling anyone to do it. I'm just telling you guys my experience with not venting for my media bottle.
All this venting talk has me questing my vent time for grain though.

If you don't vent you can literally put your hand on top of your cooker after 15m and not get instantly burned. Even if the gauge says its at 15psi the temperature inside is like 220f max and mostly air that doesn't sterilize. So you got air inside doing nothing and that air isn't even as hot as the steam is supposed to be. All for 10m of laziness.

Not my 941 on a propane burner. In my kitchen no less. It takes a while to get it up to pressure. Maybe I should.say I do slow. It's a old habit from doing no pours. I bring it up to pressure really slow.

Lets take a look at why we vent:
In chemistry there is a property of gasses and their pressures called partial pressures of mixed gasses.
In your PC, there are 2 gasses: air (combo of N, O, CO2, etc.) and steam (water vapor).
In a closed system, both will pressurize. Lets say your target psi is 15. Ok well according to the law of partial pressures, if you dont vent, that 15 psi is composed of air pressure and steam pressure. The total psi, 15, is a combination of airs and steams individual pressures. Your air pressure inside may be 6psi and your steam pressure may be 9psi or vice versa. Well, 9psi is no where near high enough to sterilize properly and air pressure doesnt sterilize.
If you vent your PC, then all of the air is replaced with steam and the steam pressure can reach a full 15psi which allows for full sterilization.
