I rarely change my blade either... I just flame the blade so doesn't really become an issue... I've got working/cooking hands though... can hardly feel 120v AC index to thumb anymore... anyone got a good link for a simple sterilizer build? Looking to do a single barrel system... Bound to be a simpler design than 2 barrels and/or a steamer with retrofit reservoir tanks and the like lol

I buy cheapo #11 blades from china. They don't last as long but even the good ones don't last too long either. I rotate through a few handles+blades during work and just change them out for new ones every run. Then im always working with sharp to pretty sharp blades rather than goobered fucked ones.

Had been using a loop (blackhead popper) for transfers, but it finally burnt in 2... is nice to have a fresh blade...

Check out Myers Mushroom Bubba Barrel. I wouldn't say it's simple tho. Also, search youtube for videos. There seem to be a ton of mushroom farmers who post all their work with instructions on how to build them on youtube.

Yeah, I have a pack of 100 of these... but only one handle hehe.

Ya it's pretty black.
Steam sterilizers are dead simple

Last pic is after 15 minutes plugged in. It gets to a rolling boil pretty quick. 120v element. Cost me about 75 bucks total including the barrel

I found using a stainless steel surgical scalpel works pretty good and never gets too hot. The machined grips that look like the cooling fins on a briggs n stratton dissipate the heat from going up the handle pretty well. I also have a jar of iso to to drop it in between transfers for a quick cool.
Aluminum exacto knives get hot unreasonably quick and I used to have to use thick rubber dish washing gloves till I switched. Probably the best myco related purchase I have made.

Yeah daze, that one's a bit over the top for me...
Dawg, that seems closer to home: any pressure gauge or relief valves? How are you filling/emptying the barrel? Pm sent

Float valve keeps the water level at 6 or so inches, heating element is mounted at 3 inches so that it is always under the water, no valves or gauges. I just keep the holes in the lid open and it pushes out steam like a pressure cooker. Let run for 24 hrs and all is golden. Can fit 200lbs of sawdust substrate blocks no easily possibly double if you cram it

No controllers of any kind. The heating element is a super basic wiring job and I just leave it plugged in the whole time. The water stays at a boil the whole 24 hrs no issues and the element is fine.
Not recommending people do what I do by forsaking safety precautions, just sayin it works as is and is basic as hell when it comes down to it. Only regulator I'd get is a pressure regulater behind the float valve to decrease the pressure coming from your hose cause if it's too high you'll get a leak.

I just use 2 or 3 cheap x-acto blades. I haven't had any problems with heat towards the handle. I only flame the blade until it gets red hot on the cutting edge, not the entire blade.

I have 3 handles and buy the 100 packs of #11 blades but I might look into sourcing from china. I usaully get fucked on import duties here in canada though when buying bulk shit overseas 13%
I don't keep blades too long either might use it for several plates but I switch it out when it gets slightly dull. They are pretty cheap.
I wonder how much blades cost from China vs Amazon canada

Well yeah, they seal with the Tyvek as well, but the Tyvek "filters" the air as the PC cools. And also importantly it provides a layer between the opening folds of the bag so they don't seal itself and pop. I've seen a few people get away with no Tyvek and just folding the bag a certain way, but mine popped most of the time or stretched out to an unreliable amount.
Can you share your bag micron rating, PC cycle details, whether you have sterilizer or PC, and method of folding the bag or whatever? I already have a bunch of sleeves and actually drape them over the opening of the bag when I go to inoculate so I'm sure I'll keep on, but am curious.

Ive had a couple pop without sleeves... gives me peace of mind too
Not that huge a bother to tuck one in: especially considering the potential damage/loss, and PITA opening if it goes well...

Yeah but they do hellishly good work. I personally couldn't make something like this. Minus the fact I don't have a tig welder.
