I started ordering my coir from Home hardware too. https://www.homehardware.ca/en/coconut-fibre-coir-brick/p/5053069 This company if you contact them direct will do bulk prices too, wasn’t worth it for me but good for some on here maybe.
I love the idea of a Canadian supplier thread. I can find lots on amazon then at check out it will say they don’t deliver to my address, frustrating.
If you're getting coir from home hardware. This one here is the ticket: https://www.homehardware.ca/en/5kg-beyond-peat-coir-coconut-fibre-soil-supplement/p/5053990
5 kg for $9.99. That's equivalent to 8.1 bricks. You can't beat that! You gotta be prepping a few monos at a time to need that much. But it's the way to go if you can use that much.
Sweet, I've been buying eco earth in bulk for a little while at $10 for 3 bricks...and I'm going through a lot of bricks. The millenium soils places sells cases of bricks for like 50% cheaper than eco earth, but they never responded to my emails requesting a quote I've gone through 30 eco earth bricks in the last few months so this is a lot better! Thank you dude
I'm gonna go to home hardware soon
Yeah, right on. Shipping sucks on coir anyways. I tried a company called V grove in Ontario lists great bulk prices, but then the shipping is 5X that. Yeah, that price is hard to beat. I used to go around to all the different pet stores around and buy 1 or 2 three packs of eco earth from each of them. Cause people look strangely at you if you walk out with 15 or 20 of them from one place. Meanwhile you buy 2 or 3 of these and nobody bats an eye. I went through 3 of these this month and a few bricks.

Yeah, that one doesn't ship to Canada though. That is a pretty killer price though. In Canada those 3 packs are usually like $12.99 Canadian. So 5 kg being equivalent to 8.1 bricks for $9.99 Canadian is pretty tough to beat around here. No shipping or anything, just available locally at that price. Just don't try to find them around me, as I've bought out most Home Hardware's within a couple hours of me. They will order more in as a rain check if you ask them to. I just haven't asked yet.

What's your water ratio for the whole 5kg brick, do you use verm or anything else or straight coir? How do you prep that much at a time? I've been doing 2-3 bricks at a time in a cooler, just pouring boiling water on it and leaving it for a few hours, but it definitely wouldn't fit that much lol. Do you chop the bricks or use something massive to hydrate that much?

Hey, I saw this on wikipedia and thought you might be interested
Quote:
In houseplants, the presence of sciarids may indicate overwatering; they may be feeding on roots that have been immersed in water too long and are thus rotting, or the gnats may be attracted to fungus growing in saturated topsoil. Consequently, allowing the soil to dry may reduce their numbers.[8] The pests are sometimes also managed by placing a layer of sand[9][10] or indoor mulch on top of the soil around plants; by introducing Hypoaspis miles mites or applying the biological larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis (var. israelensis) to kill gnat larvae; by drenching the soil annually in an insecticidal soap. Hydrogen peroxide can be mixed with water and used to kill fungus gnat larvae in infected soil with a mixture of one part 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with four parts water, then applied to the soil.[4][5] Adults can be trapped with yellow sticky traps made of yellow card stock or heavy paper coated in an adhesive since the adults are attracted to the color yellow.[11][12]
Sounds like yellow coloured sticky traps or home made ones using yellow paper will work best. I also forgot to mention the hydrogen peroxide thing but I'm not sure if it would be too much for the mycelium to handle, never really used peroxide on a shroom grow before so . I've used that method for killing the larvae that were in my cactus soil per some advice from another shroomerite. It worked out well enough I don't have a problem anymore. Hope those things don't come back, they are annoying when they fly in your face and eyes

I've done it with a few different substrates. All of my current grow tubs I did a 100% coir top layer. Some I did this separately with a separate brick, some I just set some aside before I added verm or anything else. Mostly because it beats having to pick verm off your mushrooms and makes cleaning and harvesting so much nicer and easier.
The last block of coir I did the coir first. I multiplied the weight of the block times 5 for the weight/mls of water. The block weighed 4927 grams x 5 = 24635 grams. I added that much weight in 185 F water and some gypsum. Set about 20 liters of straight coir aside and then hydrated 10 liters of verm to field capacity with hot water and mixed the two together. One of the blocks I also separately pasteurized a quart of chicken manure and mixed it in after. And that batch by far turned out the best - so now I'm wishing I had done that with all of them. All of the tubs finished much faster and had much larger mushrooms.
I've got a massive 100 quart Coleman marine cooler. I'll be able to fit 2 blocks at a time in. I'm gonna do two at a time in it next time. I bought it at Bass Pro Shop, but it's the same as this one here: https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/coleman-100-quart-xtreme-marine-cooler-94-6-l-0854245p.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwvbLkBRBbEiwAChbckZ8k_sdXwEvwOcgwJm5cIOo66r6dBMa-M9cYp_SI4fzQnn6hPOHrbRoCEkAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Given the right set up, it's still easy enough to do bucket tek with a 5 kg block or two. I've done both pasteurizing and sterilizing with them.
Yeah, it's very true. The sticky traps I used were yellow and they were covered with those things so thick that the entire paper was covered with them. I wasn't sure it was the color. I thought maybe they put some kind of scent that attracted them or something.

Thanks for that Sh4d0ws, it did start after I had been away and my tubs dried out bad when I was gone (and a giant mess of mushrooms) and I completely soaked my subs.
Yesum, I think you are right, maybe I should just do a fresh start!,

meanwhile, i'm wondering about using spent subs as potting soil. or perhaps soil amendment. got some big plants in big pots which need repotting soon. reasonable or ridiculous?

I'd say it's worth a shot might even develop some sort of mycorrhizal relationship, who knows? At the very least it should help with water retention, so just make sure the soil drains well without

depends on what you're growing. you'll probably want to kill it. but I bet spent sub dried out would make a great soil
