A butter knife is one of the best coir breaking apart tools there is. Can make a 5kg brick into dust in a couple minutes.

Thanks, I will try it, I’m desperate lol I checked every store near me, I have to order it in, which I will, but had silica on hand but didn’t want to wreck my tubs. Luckily I don’t have much on the go now so if it doesn’t work it won’t be the end of the world.

I seem to remember the back of a hammer working decently. Jam it in, pry it apart, repeat
Or you could probably just expand the whole thing with water and bag it or something. Its not like its going to mold even if its wet.
DE works for gnats? Since the little fuckers climb all over the sub and everything, that makes sense.

Good thing you were here, close call. Seen the HC tek? I've had some sopping wet for months
I meant to let it dry afterward but didn't think I'd need to specify.

I've tried a band saw, and other electric saws and they just make big messes. Serrated knives just take forever, especially against the grain. The only slow but sure way that I have figured out so far that doesn't make a huge mess is to stick a knife through the top or side and delaminate.
Big screwdriver. Pretty fast and easy. I can do a big block in a few minutes.

sounds good , how long does it takes you to dry them like this ?
also , during the boil , you add anything? coffee or gypsum ?
i guess i will make my testing i just want to ask around ...
gracias

If your wheat is really dusty/contains sticks/twigs from other parts of the wheat I would do a bunch of good rinses. I put it in a big bucket fill it with water and then pour the water through a strainer, most of the sticks float and come out and the dust gets washed out too. The strainer catches the sticks and junk that float to the top, it's good to use a strainer so that shit doesn't go down your drain. Repeat that like 5-10 times until the water in the bucket is mostly clear. Sometimes I stir it well and then let it sit for a few minutes for everything to float to the top between rinses.
Most of the wheat I buy that is intended for animal feed is really really dusty and has a fair amount of other plant materials. If you're getting wheat intended for human consumption it's probably really clean and contains no sticks/twigs.
Once I rinse it and pour off whatever isn't wheat kernels it's just as good as the human grade stuff and it's like 1/10th the price. $12.50 for 50kg

These type of sticky fly traps are what worked for me back in the day when I had that issue. https://www.homehardware.ca/en/white-fly-aphid-and-thrip-traps/p/5045018
I just put them all over the grow room and right in the fruiting chambers.

Did u try home hardware

One of these days I'll get around to making an updated canadian supply thread, last one was outdated like 5 years ago
I dunno for sure if that's the right stuff but I am pretty sure, maybe not all home hardwares carry it though. They also have lime at home hardware. And NaOH for DMT extractions

Thanks guys! I will get the sticky tape and order some DE. Those little fuckers don’t stand a chance!
I started ordering my coir from Home hardware too. https://www.homehardware.ca/en/coconut-fibre-coir-brick/p/5053069 This company if you contact them direct will do bulk prices too, wasn’t worth it for me but good for some on here maybe.
I love the idea of a Canadian supplier thread. I can find lots on amazon then at check out it will say they don’t deliver to my address, frustrating.

If you're getting coir from home hardware. This one here is the ticket: https://www.homehardware.ca/en/5kg-beyond-peat-coir-coconut-fibre-soil-supplement/p/5053990
5 kg for $9.99. That's equivalent to 8.1 bricks. You can't beat that! You gotta be prepping a few monos at a time to need that much. But it's the way to go if you can use that much.

A small knife works for me when breaking up coir. It’s never really caused me problems. Although there has been a few times where the coir was pressed entirely from one side. Making it a little harder to break up.

Sweet, I've been buying eco earth in bulk for a little while at $10 for 3 bricks...and I'm going through a lot of bricks. The millenium soils places sells cases of bricks for like 50% cheaper than eco earth, but they never responded to my emails requesting a quote I've gone through 30 eco earth bricks in the last few months so this is a lot better! Thank you dude
I'm gonna go to home hardware soon

Some notes I got on those big bricks from my experience with them for you.
Double check there's no additives, some brands add shit for plants you don't need.
1gal hydrates 1/2 a slab.
I had trouble getting it pasteurized enough with just bucket tek. I added oven pasteurizeing after hydrating to resolve it. Could be an issue not from the coir itself, but something to watch for.

this is before the boil right ? i get the floaters and twigs outta there when they come up to the surface while filling with water , not really thorough , and then i used to add coffee and gypsum to the boil and then rinse that shit off in a wire mesh , i won't do that anymore as i am trying to stick to the tek , or maybe i should do a comparative test.

the only thing I noticed with or without gypsum is the mushrooms stick to the sub better .. or worse cause it tears it up ...
But even that could just be a fluke of genetics and had nothing to do with my gypsum but I've ran lots of tubs with all sorts of shot and without it being lazy and never saw any difference

I've been using gypsum religiously for a while now. I've stopped since running out, and haven't noticed any changes. I hoped that it would buffer the coir from pH swings in later flushes, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
