I'm currently stalled up waiting for reliable spawn, but will soon be running enough bags to establish baseline stats on success rate. The spawn bottleneck isn't due to contams or anything, just my own fault doing other stupid shit instead of inoculating (such as posting on the boards right now). Definitely will update the thread later on with more information.
My current issue with the bags, I think/hope, isn't inoculating, but compromising them prior to inoculation or introducing molds post-inoculation. I believe several of my bags developed tiny pinholes on the bottom folds as the very bottom of the grain got green after sitting out 7 days without being touched. Nothing on the top, nowhere else. Research pointed this area out as problematic for these pinholes. In addition, I found about 5 potential causes for this, and I was doing all 5, I believe. So the next round should be better right off the bat.

Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan... Uh, if I can remember...
- There not being enough moisture/steam in the air causing the bags to get a little dried out and brittle. To combat this, I add a row of rings beneath my bottom trivet so I can add more water.
- The trivet itself being too hot, as well as scratchy/sharp in areas (especially the holes) and potentially snagging the bag as it expands.
- Accidentally letting my PC go way too high. The bags are only rated at a certain temperature, which I think my 17-20PSI exceeded, for sure.
- The bags touching the sides of the PC (many folks say this doesn't matter, but I think I saw EvilMushroom666 say they lined the sides of the PC with foil and the problem went away.
- Simply turning off the stove at the end of the PC cycle can cause this. Apparently turning it down gradually is advised to help equalize pressure?
- Something Frank said about unfolding the bottom folds in the bag, I think? And a vendor said this about the bottom folds and pinholes.
That's all I can remember right now.

thanks, makes sense about the trivet snagging as they expand, wouldn't have thought of that.
Interesting about the foil too. I'd been curious about lining the inside of PC or bulk sterilizers

I think longer venting would be helpful if the issue is drying

am I the only person that cringes when I see people spawning cakes to bullk? all that extra work just to risk it seems ridiculous to me.
also, why is alexander fleming credited for discovering pennicillin? he left a staph plate in the sink and when he got to it mold had grown on it and killed the culture. he wrote about it and sent it to some scientific journal having no idea of the implications. then 10 years later some dude read his paper and started production... he had nothing to do with making the antibiotic that saved so many lives...

Probably not gonna make the news, but have a look at the Pathogenicity section of a common contam, A. niger: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspergillus_niger#Pathogenicity.
Even spores that we want can be bad to one's health if in large enough numbers. Some oysters put out fucktons of spores that clog up filters and cause respiratory problems for cultivators if not vented properly.

I did a trial run with plastic lids, in preparation for my first grain attempt while I waited for some SFD to arrive in the mail. I dropped a small piece of agar from a cloned B+.I got home Friday night and after two weeks the jars looked like this almost all over. Sorry for the shitty pictures my phone has been abused.

so I shook them and now Sunday morning here they are, definitely white mycelium but my eyes might be missing something.. are the oats too wet?

Although cakes used as spawn doesn’t compare to the yield you’d get from grain it really helped me learn bulk when I was to stupid to go for grain. I agree, it kinda was the same as if I would have just fruited them as cakes, but it taught me how to make shoeboxes and prep sub.

I agree. Cakes to bulk/crumbled&cased cakes was a staple in my mush cult diet for years. For me many factors played a part in the decision.(stealth,supplies/tools needed, and easy access to them.fear of grain ) Using cakes to spawn before going to grain made the transition into grain a breeze.
