My new grow space fucked me. Still dialing things in. It's been so cold my basement was too cold to use, it was in the high 50's down there.

I think I will be succesfull at least on one of the four shoeboxes I made. One I killed by accidentally spraying with WD40. Lesson learned there, dont use the same spray for water and WD40. The other three look good, one of those three is already pinning. Fingers crossed...

You wpuld definatly benefit from a traditional mono. Like this spawn was iffy on this one but it's the only one going RN showing Metabs but i may get something

you need a regular mono that restricts air flow. shoeboxes are pretty much open air fruiting. dont fight your climate go with it. prepare your sub on the wetter side to if need be.

I think bottom water the two was the right move. The other one seemed to hold moisture content better for some reason.

I do agree though, the grow space conditions were not ideal, and with the shoeboxes it was tough.

Fingers crossed these grow something. No major bad signs thus far. The mycelium does look strong and they are knotting up.

How would you all recommend fixing coir that's at field capacity at the top of the bucket but overly wet at the bottom?

I'd dump it over in another container and mix it well, and add verm if it's still too wet. If you don't have verm use your imagination like taking the wet portion out for a half day and mixing it back in Idk

Can someone tell me what's going on here ? These are standard MEA plates with AA+ on it. They look strange. Plates for my other two varieties looks fine.

Btw, this is one of those plates 23 days later. It grows so slowly, just like all my other plates.

What Agar recipe are you using?

Those plates do not look healthy to say the least.. I'm not 100% sure what ya got going on there. 23 Days is a very long time for a plate. Especially to only be colonized that much.

Also it looks like you made transfers. Were the previous plates healthy?

Using 30g ME powder, 20g agar to 1L water.
The previous plates might have been a bit wonky too. I'm not sure when they suddenly turned like this though. Luckily I still have a spore print of AA+.

How long should a plate take to be colonized ?

About 2 weeks to colonize a 100mm plate. Under normal temps

Do you guys case APE at spawn or once your sub colonizes? I am going to make some shoeboxes this morning. Was wondering if I should use straight coir for the tops or what’s the best method for APE.

I agree with what was said above. I do 20g Agar 20g Malt per 1000ml of water. If you still have spore print left I would order some Sterile q -tips and try out Pastywhyte's. The Tiger Drop is an easy way to go from print to substrate

I have always just used top layers of coir at spawn for APE without issue. I let the jars consolidate for a week or so too before spawning. Never had a problem with it this way.

I used a pseudo-casing at spawn with some remaining coir.  Still got tons of blobs.

No worries though, I grind most of my PE anyway.  They make great chocolates

Oh okay, sweet. They have been fully colonized now for three days. Would it be okay to spawn them now or should I wait? I want to avoid to many blobs if possible.

Yep, leave a plate long enough and it'll start to change colour. It seems like whatever is in food colouring is subject to decomposition and maybe use as food by mycelium

Hmmm I'm pretty sure the soonest I spawned was around 3 days post-colonization and it came out fine but i waited 5-7 days for most of my ape grows.  I'd personally give it a few more days for good measure. Maybe spawn a few jars today and the rest in 4 days and compare results?
