researching how to do bags without a flowhood again. seems a lot of people have trouble with pre-sealing but a select few can pull it off. maybe I'll try this

edit: Then I found an old post with autoclavable bag clips, doesn't sound useful to me but maybe somebody else

i was poking my own fun at the mockery of one person by another using an old, and i would consider obscure reference. then after completing said internet search, totally not getting what "the patty hearst of mushcult" could actually mean... like kidnapped and brainwashed to commit armed robbery? so well. i choose to bask in my ignorance.

good luck on them bags, tho. hope you nail it first try.

I'd still use the spawn lol... you could dig it out, your exposing it to open air when you spawn anyhow

believe it indicates contamination when its real hard to break up.

i see no harm in digging it out with a spoon, you're spawning in open air

it does? hm. they all looked and smelled great. what kinda contamination causes tough mycelium?

and oh absolutely i still spawned it. still some glass in there too, but i reckon it wouldn't hurt anything.

I dropped oyster grain spawn in the bottom of my soapy SAB once, put it back into a container and it recovered fully. Healthy colonized grains are fairly resilient.

You're mixing it into coir anyway might as well scoop it. Just obviously don't do G2G that way

for sure. honestly i might never g2g anyway. ok well, at least until i get some edible cultures running.

spawned a few other jars last night, and used a miniature pry bar i had handy to gently break them up. worked great. but if those jars were contaminated, i'd love to know with what. pure cube scent, no slime, no off color, totally uniform texture...

Generally something bacterial in those cases - which isn't the end anyway we've all spawned bacterial jars eith success here.

Could just be consolidated healthy myc though!
Although in my experience if it doesnt break up from a bash they usually turn out to be contam in some way.

i'd be inclined to believe it were infection if all ten jars weren't all the same. i mean, i'm not the zen master of sterile technique, but my success rate on agar is quite high. if one was infected, they were all infected.

drilling into it further, finding lots of examples of bacterial infection, and recalling a definite infection i had in a small jar a month or so ago, there were distinct symptoms. specifically smell and slime. that one i mention smelled like fermented orange juice when i opened the jar, and the grain smeared like goo. there are infections which exhibit no symptoms apart from mycelial behavior? i gotta get me a microscope.

I can't seem to get my rye grain to the proper moisture content.. Slow colonization is what makes me believe this is the issue.
About a week in the wedges seem to be just barely starting to colonize the grain, this time nothing has completely stalled out but last time they worked similar on the grain and stalled.
I'm using spitballs rye prep soaking for around 20 hours and I boil for 10 minutes afterwards before a 90 minute PC.
Any ideas? Should I try increasing the PC time? My berries don't seem to exactly "explode" with water if I bite them after the boil.
Additionally I usually steam them off for about 30 minutes or more after the boil, until the steam stops coming off.
