I use a scalpel I ordered on Ebay, but I find myself going back to my exacto knife a lot. I like the fine point.

Man, I hope so. My cheap alcohol burner can't hold a candle to that bad ass unit, but my burner doesn't get used anymore because of the carbon issue.

It's nice to not have to replace the blade. It could use a sharpen

I find I never really need a sharp cutting edge.
I just use a hooked dental pick.  I use it for agar transfers, cloning, and swabbing spore prints.  It's a good multitool

How do you make transfers with s dental hook? Just by pushing down into the agar to cut it and hooking on to pick up? Sounds like it works well for transferring, especially getting the agar off easily.

Damn. If I changed my blade everytime I'd be sitting on a shit load of old blades only used once.  I mean I guess I could understand if we were cutting something other then super soft agar.🤷‍♂️

Mine currently and still going strong

Idk mane. U can send me some of your old ones. Shiaaaat :begger:

Its not necessarily the factor of it being sharp, I like to use clean blades. I worked in a lab for a while and that instilled certain habits, new blades, new needles, and so on. I have a sharps container that's where my used blades go, most hospitals give them out free.

That looks like the same one I have, and the blade looks familiar too lol. I put my last one in a few weeks ago and unless it snaps itll be in there a good while yet.

anybody ever collected a spore print from a polypore? Guess you probably just cut off a chunk and put it on foil like anything else.

Wanting to try to get artist conks on my property. They're oddly absent from the area.

edit: Or wait, maybe I could just wash the spores that collect on the top of the cap into some water and spray that on logs. see if the dirtiest possible method will work.

Only thing I suggest looking out for when using really short blades like an exacto knife blade is try to not have the wedge ever touch more then the blade. Like if I'm transferring a wedge from a plate to a jar and the wedge moves and somehow touches the bottom part of the handle (it happens) I won't use that wedge. So that being said sometimes I wish the blade was longer like a scaple blade but I manage.

I use the same exacto but run the blade further out to avoid that.  seems to heat up faster too.

I'm  thinking I need to go back to proper petris and ger several transfers deep before I inoculate anything.
