Just found this plate of Caerulescens clone I apparently forgot about. Had it marked for transfers but never did. Looks like itβs trying to grow some pins.

anybody measure the ph of their casing? thinking I ought to start
I seem to remember litmus paper having a short shelf life. Are there reasonably cheap ph meters that are worth a shit or..?

I've used this one with good success. The catch is that you'll definitely want some calibrating solution to verify that the reading is correct. Litmus paper is nice because it's basically foolproof in that you can trust it and there's no calibration necessary.
I don't have a lot of experience, but it seems like while some people test it, most can't be bothered, and still achieve good results. I think coir is usually neutral (5 - 7 pH) at least compared to peat moss (4ish pH).
Do you use a straight coir casing, verm, verm/coir? Just curious

I'm lazy, one teaspoon of hydrated lime per cup of peat

thanks for the reply!
Still pretty new to casing but I do what i think is classic 50/50+. peat moss, verm, and lime.

test strips all the way. here's my reasoning: any tool that has to be stored in special solution, frequently calibrated, and cleaned with deionized water is more trouble than it's worth. and consider what you're jamming this thing into. hydroponics solutions are quite different from myco casing materials. http://www.just4growers.com/stream/hydroponic-growing-techniques/how-to-take-care-of-your-ph-meter.aspx
general question: what can be predicted about a culture's performance based on its appearance on agar plates?
or put another way, what traits can be selected for solely on the plate? does mycelium appearance mean anything?

Yeah, valid points. Also, as far as the expiration timeline for the strips, check this out:
https://assist.asta.edu.au/print/3660 https://support.hach.com/app/answers/answer_view/a_id/1003942/~/what-is-the-shelf-life-of-the-ph-paper%2C-0-14-ph-range%2C-100%2Fpk%3F-
So it seems like it really comes down to how you store them. 4 year shelf life is probably more than enough to not have to worry about all the BS involved with the meter

yeah, i forgot to mention, the test strips i just got say "shelf life of 3 years". but then, there's a symbol of an hour glass and "2019-11". looks like they already been on the shelf for two. guess i better use em up. good call on proper storage, too. didn't occur to me they could be light sensitive.
can't wait to try these next week. time to make some soap.

Would that dry them all the way through or just "crisp" the outsides . IDK cos I've never used one.
