Without the LAB part, I agree with boiling hot, as a personal preference, I find the agar and additives dissolve better. I also found that the agar should be mixed with the water, first, before any additives are added.
With T-Gel, adding both the tea then water, then agar, makes it not set (at all).

Lme dissolves in cold water it's just quicker with hot water.
I'm not seeing the problem here as long as u add hot water and give it a shake before you PC it.
Wouldn't be any clumps that way. Your sugar will be well dissolved before your reaching carmelization temps.
The same cannot be said for agar but it shouldn't have any sugar in it anyways.

So this is the last little chunk of coir from my Mazapatec malfunction. Hard to believe how many pins are on this little piece!:-)
Glad it’s gonna be over though. Was on the front lines battling green mold for a few days.

The lab I worked at always boiled for a minimum of five minutes before sterilizing the solution. Always.

I was told it ensures a homogeneous mixture, we also had a magnetic stir rod in it while it was boiling on the hot plate, removed before sterilization.
I can never get a mix as clear as we did in the lab.

I get mine glassy clear using malt extract boiled first to precipitate some protein crud that forms when it's first heated to boiling for a while

Precipitating protein curd? So, there is no reason to do it, yet you promoting it could lead to noobs freaking out that they didn’t do it...like now.
@ Germs - Ha! You still boiling before pc?

For me the water is usually coming off a grain soak that just came off a boil. I’ve seen it mentioned in several recipes to put it in the microwave with the cap very loose and run it until it starts to boil. Then take it out, tighten the cap and shake before PC.
Not having to mic takes a step out for me so I’m good with that👍🏼

Are you referring to me? If so, definitely wasn’t confused about that. I make 2 - 400ml batches every time. One to use after it cools down and one on deck to use when needed.

Definitely wasn’t freaking out about it. That’s been part of the recipes I’ve used and this was the first time I forgot about it. I’ve ruined batches of agar before by taking short cuts so just wanted to make sure this wasn’t a step that could hinder sterilization.
Didn’t realize it was going to turn into a debate. I’m with @bod. I’ve got 3 minutes to spare to nuke my agar prior to PC. Can’t hurt and will continue to do so.

I think he was responding to me about getting it to be clear before you PC it. I have no scientific evidence to support the theory that boiling before PC is superior but that's how I was taught and it has worked for me this far, my advice is do what works for you.

Yeah, I hear ya...a mycologist taught me to make agar and pour plates in a mycology lab. We never boiled anything before pc’ing. If you want to boil shit, go for it. It’s still a waste of time.

Ahh yes but there are those, "situations". Last week I was gonna make some slants, normally I mix, boil, pour into bottle, then straight to PC. This time I just put everything in the bottle and shook it as in, hey everyone else is doing it. So I shook the bottle, grabbed my 5 inch 14 gauge syringe, filled my test tubes for slants, loaded the PC and ran my cycle.
After the cycle, I put the slants in my 2nd SAB at a angle to harden and poured my plates. Came back the next day to check on the slants, liquid.
In a panic I checked my plates as in WTF!?! but they were good. So what must of happened is the agar settled fast in my bottle and my slants didn't get much at all resulting in liquid waste of time.
Made a *note to self* boil the shit first if using some to make slants, don't boil first if just doing plates. Gravity's often a bitch.
