Speaking of hwfp. I’m about to make up a new batch of sub for some P. Caerulescens spawn. Was considering CV and hwfp. Any other suggestions?
I’m also working on inoculating some more plates and was thinking about using sterile swabs rather than my loop. Thoughts?
Thanks,
BB

Supplement the sawdust with wheat bran. At about 2 parts sawdust to 1part bran and then about 55% water

Can this just be pasteurized or does it need to be sterilized?

And that's why I stopped using pure wood. I now mix wood: 50-50, 66-33 | paper pellets-wood pellets. I can run 75% water content with 66-33, 55% is seriously dry for fruiting and yield.
50-50, coir-wood is another alternative for more water.
----
All of my most colourful, most robust fruits have enough water to almost squeeze it out. My basic indoor fruits are more dry, which effects solubles and uptake.

For my oysters I actually use 80lbs of oak pellets, 40 lbs of soy hull pellets, 2 pounds of chicken poop and 15gallons of water (just over 124lbs of water). This consistently gives me field capacity. I've used more water before and the resulting mixes are just too wet for proper colonization, for me, my recipe (actually Gr0wers) results in 21 colonization times for a 5 lb bag innocullated with amycel 3015 blue oyster

I steam sterilize my hwfp/bran and hwfp/soy hull for 24 hours in my drum sterilizer.

Excessive nutrition has long been known to cause mutations in fruits. IIRC, it's why folks need to consolidate with PF Tek, allowing the mycelium time to digest the super nutrient-rich substrate. I don't know anything about shiitake, but if possible, let it consolidate a bit before fruiting (or just supplement less).

Quadman over on the Gourmet board grows shiitake very well. He’s also a cool cat. Might check in with him for some tips.
