Hey, your story sounds like mine. Took me a while to hunt my problems down. It helped a lot to do tests to try to narrow down where the problem was. And to post photos of plates that you feel are clean.... Photos of the jars growing out that you think are clean.

I was learning bags. And my agar work was decent. But I didn't know I couldn't open a bag in a SAB. Until I tested opening one, without noc'ing it (it went bad). And when I started posting photos of grain colonizing that I thought was clean, but others highlighted bacteria I didn't know how to see.

So helpful! And I've been at it for 9 years.

T

Mike~  When you add your coir casing at "just the right time" to keep it from colonizing, when might that be?

I thought this petri contam was weird. I haven't been getting many lately. Then I wondered if a tiny fly got in, when the lid was off. (I'm using a SAB) The contam is in long little lines, perhaps footprints?

I guess more likely is a water drop rolling around. I can't remember now.

Cool. I've always enjoyed having some uncolonized coir on the surface. I feel less cautious about adding water if there is that buffer.

OMG, I just found another contam'd plate, this time I'm almost sure its a bug! I can see the tracks in the condensation. 10 other plates are clean, just these two. Funny!

Maybe 3 days old.

Okay... its a SAB... I always accept some contams. I've just never noticed the lines before. what causes the lines in the condensation? Maybe something in the plastic petri manufacturing? The bug would get in during my transfer. but maybe its no bug. I mainly think it would be amusing if it was. I certainly can't see it.

I've never waited that long. I bet you'd be ok if you simmered them quite a bit. But if they were lightly simmered, with zero burst kernels, they might be awfully dry.

Quick question regarding Myco bags and PC's. I don't pre-seal. Some people brazenly go without the tyvek sleeves. I'm wanting to try that. Accordian fold alone, taped down.

When is the optimum time to seal the bag? Some do it right at zero pressure, which makes some sense, cause it right before the room air begins to fill the PC.

I've been messing around with cubes growing in 4 quart rye berry bags... and I thought it was a fluke... but wrapping a bag in bubble wrap not only nearly eliminates condensation on the bag wall, but it also speeds early growth (before there is even much condensation). All these bags are identical. Noc'd with 1/4 of a agar disk in LI. Pretty cool. I'm going to begin prepping my Rye wetter to see if it can now handle it without getting sweaty and bacterial. (these are at 46% water content) (about 10 days in)

My friend found this at a rebuilding center and bought it. He is offering for me to use it as a flow hood. Will it work?

https://teamequip.com/clean-air-41843-1061-cap109bl-424-cap1220-2x4x4l-120-motorized-ceiling-fan-filter-units-t58660/

It came with a few extra hepa filters.

Thanks, T

regarding this ceiling hepa filter, these are the stats the company provides:

Features
Low profile design
Lightweight
All-metal filter housing
Prefilter
90 ft./min. average face velocity
99.99% DOP test at 0.3 microns
Suited for cleanrooms of Class 100,000 to Class 10

and the label on the unit says "filter type 4-9" whatever that means.

Is there enough plenum to make the flow even?

I know this was back a bit, but responding now to shroomawayer's post on agar to grain testing. I am super interested in why my LI is so slow to colonize my rye berries. I worked to make my malt agar petri dishes be just wet enough to break up in my blender, but also be ropey. But it takes 6 days for the LI to leap off, (two days for the lil agar bits to leap off)

I'm using 4 quart myco bags. About 1/4 agar disk in 25cc's of LI. the berries are quite dry 46% water content. They are growing out fine after they get going. Doesn't look bacterial.

And don't skimp on the size of the SAB. These massive ones are the only way to go, and not super easy to find. I had to visit 4 box stores before I found a huge one. Small SAB's don't work well.

Hot air rises quite a bit, so no fan needed, IMO. although many people use a fan in their design. I dislike the constant drone.... Its not rocket science.
