Monotub after nine days in garbage bag (first grow)
    #23527972 - 08/10/16 11:32 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Pretty excited! This is the tub nine days after the coco choir tek, mixed it in and put it in a dark garbage bag in the closet. Would like to know what now... when to fruit or do I need to store it longer?

Doesn't look like it's done colonizing.  It needs a bit longer, then if you decide to case it, it will need another few days on top of that unless you case and put straight to fruiting, or don't case at all.

Also, as long as you aren't giving them FAE, a little light will not hurt them, and will actually benefit colonization.  As long as you don't give them direct light, you don't need to store in a dark location.  That is a long time mushroom myth that needs to die.

I followed the tek... mixed 2 quarts verm with the choir, then mixed the broken up mycelia with part of the mix in the tub, then added the rest for a top layer. By definition, I thought that's what casing was.

The tub has holes and I intended to shock them by opening them up as soon as it was ready to fruit. There will be polyfil to put in the holes for the filtering.

Thanks PEOPLE! should the whole thing be white like the jars before I open it up to FAE? Thanks, I'll put it in non direct light as soon as I get home!

A casing by definition is a non nutritious top layer intended only as a microclimate to support pin growth, and after you get pins, a mechanism to support getting water to them.  Nothing else.

Make sure you don't have any holes open until it's ready for fruiting, or at the very least stuff those poly holes as tight as possible until it's ready to fruit.

As for light, just setting it in a corner somewhere with ambient room light will be fine.  If you can read a book in the room, then it's enough light and shouldn't induce premature pinning unless it's getting to much fresh air.

Okay so its optional. I'm going to give the tub more time in the bag. If I was to case it then that would be another layer of verm or verm and coco mix over what's colonized in a few weeks?

If you decide to case it, it won't take long to colonize the casing at all.  Maybe 3 days max, depending how thick you make it.  If you use a thin layer to case with, you could probably put it straight into fruiting conditions without even allowing it to colonize.  That however is your choice  Everybody has their preferences.    Generally if you do let it colonize though you get better Pinsets and ultimately better yields.

Rage, I'm not trying to be redundant... I think I need a step by step. Right now, its choir and verm mixed with the mycelia with a thin layer of choir and verm over the top of that mix. So I'm waiting for it all to colonize. Right now, it getting whiter as the fungus grows to the surface. Then I add a non-nutritious layer on top of that to case it? I really just want a high yield.

this is the tek I used: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595/fpart/1/vc/1

In the tek, it says to wait for it to colonize and then just take the tape off, stuff the holes and get it into fruiting. Is that cool? And as far as giving them water, what's that deal? I bought a spray bottle that has a fine mist on it. Spray them directly or hit the lid and sides just to keep the environment around them moist, and then fan out the box maybe daily?

Use jiffy mix or something along the lines of peat moss verm gypsum inocuole I believe uses a coir casing at full colonization works good for him but with cubes you don't have to case people just do for better flushes ... and you want to directly spray the sub and mushies once they pop if it needs it ... as long as its dialed in right it won't need much maintenance till they start growing and 12 on 12 off light cycle is beneficial during all stages of growth

Thanks rage. I looked at some other posts. apparently, I didn't know what colonization in a tub looked like! it needs to get white/fully colonized then that's when I consider if I want to case it or not. I see why it is optional because whether it's cased or not, there should be growth. So once it's white/colonized completely, I'm going to throw down a casing layer for the benefit of beginning pins. I'll also be opening it up to the air once the casing layer is down. Could I use perlite? Verm? I'd like to do coco choir, but it seems to be very nutritious and I thought that would defeat the purpose of the casing.

And just to bitch... this is no where near as simple as I had originally hoped. I thought I would be rolling in fungus by now

I'll keep this post updated with photos as they come in!

this is it up to date. it doesn't seem like it's colonizing near as fast as I thought it would. I didn't use a lot of spawn... maybe about 4 half pint jars. a friend said the coco might not be nutrient rich enough. don't know if that has anything to do with anything.

any help, advice, or pointers would be appreciated! thanks.

Yeah 4 half pints is less than half the desired amount of spawn for a brick of coir. All you can do is wait it out.

Also remove the tape from the garbage bag liner. You eventually want this to shrink with your sub as it colonizes and pumps out fruits. Having the tape is counter productive. Its fine to open the lid to take the tape out and also as mentioned prieviously, light will aid the colonization process.

Good luck man keep us posted!

EDIT: A casing will prevent your sub from drying out and in most cases actually increases yields. Casing is a good idea. It can be as simple as adding a 1/4 inch of vermiculite at field capacity on top of your colonized sub.

I was afraid of that.

So it will colonize, but because I didn't use a lot of spawn, it's going to take a lot longer than average?

I'll take off the tape and keep the tub in the window. it's sealed pretty well. I think I'm just going to fix another tub for a grow in the meantime.

Thanks!

Yeah it should colonize but next time use 4.5 quarts of spawn. That's 9 half pint jars or 6 quart jars filled 3/4. What kind of spawn did you use?

Always keep some sort of second project going, even if it's just new varieties on agar. You don't want to have to start at spore again next time around.

Thanks! Really need the encouragement right now. I've been waiting and waiting.

These are two cakes (verm and rice flour) that I birthed a few days ago. Like I said, they are Golden Teachers. Do I need to shock them in the cold? If so, how do I do that? I'm concerned because I have two other cakes I birthed over a week ago and they haven't started "pinning" or anything yet.

These are the other two. They were sort of defects. They only got about 90% colonized after over a month, so I got sick of waiting and put them in a small chamber I made. Also, the jars I used had the beveled tops, so I had to take them out with a spoon. That's why they are a little deformed. There is some blue bruising on them. I've been misting once a day and fanning two or more times. These are also half-pint cakes. I've since started using quart jars instead.

Waiting for them to finish colonizing and consolidating in the jars would probably take less time than waiting for them in your fruiting chamber. Patients is a virtue

You could be looking at 2 weeks or more before you start to see pins.

Did you build a shotgun fruiting chamber to spec?
Did you dunk your cakes?

You didnt roll them... While you were waiting for the cakes to consolidate you could have been taking the time to browse shroomery to make sure that you were going to be doing things properly.

Is it really necessary to dunk and roll? My chamber was meant to be a monotub. I put saturated perlite in there and called it a fruiting chamber. Not to spec but will it work?

THATS RIGHT MOTHERBITCHEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

Edit: I'm so stoked about this little guy! all of this work and I had no idea if it was going to pay off! I would like to thank those on the shroomery that posted the coco choir tek, mono tub tek, and other teks. without you, i would not have the step by steps i needed to make this little guy possible. i would also like to thank the poster that told me to put the tub in the window as this, i believe, had everything to do with the beginning of magnificence. I would like to also thank my persistence in the face of depression and doom. Also those who encouraged my patience.

So what do I do now? The tub is still not open to FAE. would this be a good time to open up the holes and fill them with polyfil? Should there be a regimen for spraying and airing out the tub?

it's folded in. the bag is completely free on the inside now.

there are babies everywhere! I'm pretty stoked to finally see this final part of this part of the process.

Opened up the holes and it's fruiting now.

Do I need to mist them every so often and fan out the tub?

Nice fruits man, congrats! But I wanted to quickly point out the minor detail that your scale won't show an accurate reading holding it in your hand like that, it should be on a flat surface.
