Georgia Woodland Bolete ID * 1
    #23527693 - 08/10/16 09:21 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
North Georgia (ATL). Mid August, with heavy rainfall. Partially open coniferous woodland (tree distribution not dense but not wide open either; small stand of trees near a clearing within a larger forest), many dead trees (over 2 years old) nearby. Growing in small clusters from submerged or partially submerged hardwood logs.
Other boletes, Amanita, and Russula species found in the same area.

Gills:
Pores evenly distributed, vertically arranged, and uniform; pore surface undulating; pores a very pale tan with yellow overtones, staining slightly blue when bruised.

Stem:
Intensely bright yellow throughout with randomly distributed blackish dots in places, staining slightly reddish-brown in an erratic pattern in spots within; thin; fibrous; bright yellow powdery covering which comes off on the hands when handling; ~3in. tall and .5in. diameter; reticulated near the cap

Veil: Thin, whispy, fibrous, opaque yellow. Full veil remains attached to some specimens through maturity; very distinct.

Cap:
1.5-3in. in diameter, intensely bright yellow across the cap surface, with slight reddish-brown scales arranged in a reptilian pattern (the overall effect is still BRIGHT YELLOW, the scales only visible upon close inspection); inrolled or overhanging margin (although this may be part of the veil structure). Cap interior off white with a yellow tinge, firm and apparently thick, but looks insubstantial and watery.

Spore print color:
Not confirmed, but the staining on the underside of removed veils suggests olive-brown

Bruising:
Stem staining reddish-brown on the inside in an erratic pattern, gills staining slightly blue upon bruising, cap interior staining briefly blue in an erratic pattern, then fading to a watery color. Bruising inconsistent across the various parts of the fruit.

Smell:
Slight musty smell, slightly mushroomy with a hint of feet.

Taste:
Sour asshole. Vinegar mixed with an indefinable musty taste. Unpleasant overall.

Sound: Rubbery, similar to a bouncy rubber ball

Other information:
The entire mushroom is intensely yellow, reminiscent of Gymnopilus (which is what prompted me to pick it in the first place, only to find it has pores). The clusters are grouped loosely together, and contain at most 3 fruit per cluster.

Indeed. Pulveroboletus ravenelii. Everything matches the descriptions I'm reading, right down to the vinegar taste.

Thanks for the lead.
