What in the world is this??
    #23525707 - 08/09/16 06:47 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

There's a noticing smell in my pmp, I see this little patch of stuff growing. About... Maybe a week into fruiting. Not sure the strain of cube, I know I haven't been giving enough fresh air, maybe that's part of it but what are we looking at here:

:horrified:

I'd get rid of that.  The mushroom too... Like, on the double.

What led you to use a PMP in 2016?  That's sort of one of those things that are really attractive to new people, and yet simultaneously require an advanced hand to actually get to work.

Simple as this-
I'm gone from home for 12 hr a day. Im unable to mist and fan while I'm gone. Seems like the pmp was more or less automated. Humidity is easy to control and temp as well. The only thing I seem to lack is the fresh air. As you can tell it's my first grow. I've read a lot, but never enough you know. Thanks for the links.

The design of the PMP does not allow enough FAE to allow healthy growth of mushrooms. I'd toss the cake and keep the fruits, looks bacterial.

Is the fruit safe to pick and eat? I mean at this point the (bacteria??) hasn't gotten to it right? So..??

I wouldnt eat it. I have no idea what you have going on there.
The SGFC is basically maintenence free. Just mist before and after work and I promise it'll be enough.
FAE is soooooo important!!

Read more about bulk growing and monotubs.
Basically you ll need grains (spawn), substrate, and monotub instead of sgfc.
And how to prepare them. So easy.

I trashed the cake and the one under it. I stacked them for space, plus I had no pins growing on top. Only sides. I put 10 more cakes into the fc = why I stacked. Thanks for the replies and advise. I've been reading Frank's mono journal. I'd like to do bulk eventually - just thought it'd be easier to get the basics down on cakes and figure it out with small batches first.

Different strokes for different folks man. Some people dive into the deep end and get it over with and others like to take the step by step route. It all depends on you and what you prefer. Personally I feel pressured on time cause I spent quite a few years wasting them so I like to get down to big business. Read, read and read is all I can say, watch videos too.

Did you clean the SGFC before adding new cakes? Cause whatever that monster was it could be lurking again

RR developed the sgfc while working 12 hour shifts
By typing "gone 12 hour  fruiting chamber" into the search function this was the first result, in a thread called sgfc vs pmp no less. Use the search function, it's great.

A quick search will reveal that when I designed the shotgun terrarium I was working 12 hour shifts, an hour drive from home.  This resulted in being gone 14 hours per day, with no way to perform fanning or misting.
RR

Quote:

The shotgun terrarium already is automatic.  It works based on natural circulation patterns, where air travels from areas of high pressure to low.  I designed it when I was working 12 hour days, with an hour of travel time and couldn't be there for 14 hours per day, and still needed to sleep during that off time.

You mist to make up for substrate moisture lost due to the automatic fresh air exchange, which happens even at 99% humidity.  There is no free ride.  If you put an airstone and bubbler in the terrarium, the slight positive pressure that is created screws up the operation, destroying the entire principle that makes it work.
RR

i agree with the above, but if you can fan more, by all means do it! mushrooms like 3-4 FAE an hour in nature! maybe still only mist a couple times a day, but fan your FC anytime you think about it!

Actually, mushrooms in nature do not get fresh air three to four times per hour, they get constant fresh air.

I strongly object to the assertion in outdated books that give an 'air exchanges per hour' figure, which totally disregards CO2 levels.  Imagine yourself with a plastic bag over your face, where you could only lift it three to four times per hour to take a breath.  How long would you survive?

A shotgun terrarium does not need to be fanned out, but it's always a good idea to wave the lid over the top whenever you mist, just for added forced air exchange.  A shotgun terrarium is designed to provide 24/7 fresh air, just like in nature.  This is why it works so well.
RR

look around and see who still uses a PMP. follow the advice of people who have some results to show they're the "experts" we have been around the block, unless you want to relive history don't build a PMP

SGFC is way more automated than a PMP mist a couple times a day that's it. If a SGFC is too difficult I would hate to meet you because you probably can't manage teeth brushing either

Wow hey thanks. I didn't think to specifically search my exact scenario but hey there it is. Everything really has been discussed here. What a time to be alive. I guess it's time to ditch the pumps and charge my drill batteries and go to work! That bit of info was pretty helpful. I'll check out the rest of that thread just cuz I'm interested.
Thanks everyone for your advise and suggestions. Except the dude who thinks I can't brush my teeth. You ought to see how good I brush the fuck out of my teeth.

No I didn't clean it fuck I didn't even think about that. Just opened a zip lock bag, turned it over in my hand and grabbed that mutant cake pile and tossed it out. Now there's a blank spot where it was. I've been fanning my pmp since, waiting until I can drill 1000 more holes and make a sgfc. So here's a question (that's probably been answered before) I'll search after I ask... But what would one do with his brf cakes (13total) while he's changing his pmp into a sgfc? Let them hang out on a plate in the open? Put them into some plastic buckets or something? I have two growing several fruits and the rest are basically just cakes maybe a few pins.
Thanks in advance. I'll see if I can find anything on the search.

I'd wrap them in a plastic tent much like you do with these generic grow kits. It depends on how long you're going to take to build the SGFC. If it's a few hours, just leave em in the open, if it's days make the tent to retain the humidity

but yeah next time clean out the whatever it is you have before placing new cakes. A simple hot water bath is enough. Its what I do with my monos after the bulk is spent, quick hot shower and then air dry it

Make sure to use a soft-bristled brush and don't brush too vigorously. It can wear down the enamel as well as push back the gums exposing the sensitive root area. Receding gums can also lead to other dental problems such as periodontal disease, and even the need for fillings, root canals or tooth extraction. According to the Wall Street journal, dentists estimate that 10-20 percent of people have damaged their teeth and gums as a result of overbrushing

Frig even if you left em out on the table for a day it would be getting more fae than in a tent. Which is more far important than humidity. Just give em a good misting

I concur with everyone in here, PMPs suck balls for begginers. I would probably end up  trying to get one of those to work, much better and more maintenance free FCs out there nowadays.
