Oh, and Lophosaurus is the one who just won the giveaway last night
Only had a few people enter, sadly. Oh well, though. Loph seemed pretty pumped about winning it.

Yeah I know it'd be a little (or lot more likely) more work than what you're currently doing. If I did them I would be doing it pixel by pixel because I honestly don't know what I'd do with 6+ of them I'd really only be interested in doing them if I can work out the food safe dye tek so I could make them true to their color schemes. I kinda already know how to do it I just gotta get the time to play around with it and perfect it. I know it will involve pressure cooking and I also have 2 different colorants in mind. One is just basic food coloring and the other would be using foods for the coloring (like annatto or beets for reds/oranges etc).

Yeah, but oh well. A few people got supporter accounts and there was a few bucks that went to charity, so I'll call it a win.

How would you be able to do it pixel by pixel you think?
I also fucked around with trying to dye wood.. With no success at all.
I'd definitely like to figure that out, so if you ever come up with a tek, holler!

Just cut square blocks and glue them side by side. It would be a pain in the ass as you said. The upside is the 8 bit image is very basic with usually just a few colors so you could just cut a bunch of say 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 x 1 inch cubes of 3 different colors, glue the blocks row by row. The 1 inch width would be the sides you glued together. You could then cut off ~ 1/8 from the 4 faces giving you a very clean edge 1x1x1 row. Once you get all the rows done you could then just put them in order and glue all those up.
If you made some kind of jig to keep the blocks perfectly aligned you could probably skip the last bits of that step and just glue up a bunch of 1x1x1 blocks row by row instead but I'd feel kinda iffy on that. Just slightly off here and there adds up so they would have to perfectly aligned and that is probably a lot easier said than done.
If I've learned anything in woodworking, it's that the easy way is never the easy way.
Oh and yeah I'll definitely let you know if I figure it out. My first attempts were failures with the dye only penetrating about 1/16 into the wood and the coloring for the lighter colors was very weak, almost imperceptible. I'm looking for a way to make deep color all the way through the wood.

I don't see how you'd be able to clamp and glue little blocks like that.. But, maybe there's a way... I only know the way that I do it. Whether that's best or not, I have no idea. But if you could clamp and glue those, that'd make the 8 bit project a lot more straightforward, that's for sure.

You could, it just wouldn't be/isn't an easy thing to do. I've glued multiple scraps together to make sheets to do non-structural stuff with (like the bottom of my wife's jewelry box). It's a pain in the ass trying to get everything to line up, which is why I would cut them slightly larger on the faces so you could trim away the excess and the crooked lines. If you used maybe a couple pieces of angle iron bolted into a frame that is exactly one inch all the way down, you could lay the blocks in that and use a long pipe clamp to compress it all together. Still it's not as straight forward as it would seem, first you'd need to compress it all together good along the length, then back the clamp off some, and use more clamps to clamp the pipe down the length onto the "tops" of the blocks as a straight edge, because all the blocks are going to bow a bit (with the "ends" slightly higher than the middle) when you clamp it down. You have to restrict the movement in two axes and have it all move on only one axis (the one parallel to the travel of the clamp).
That's the issue with clamping a bunch of small pieces together, is keeping everything lined up right. When you glue a bunch of lengths of longer boards together it's not such a problem because you can put clamps down the length to cancel out the tendency of the clamps to "pull" the wood into a bowed shape.

I think you would need to have a finished light grain cutting board. Then CNC router out the individual squares for pixels. Maybe go around 3/8" deep.
inlay with precut squares of dark or different colored wood to create the pixelated pattern. Then you just have to glue in the squares.

First order of business is to roll some blunts on it in bed.

Just wanted to bump this thread and say this cutting board was worth every penny. It's a beast. Been getting busy on it cooking for my new girl. Thanks again brother!

Yeah man, that's my general demeanor when I heard "Something something shLong cutting board giveaway" so I clicked the link and went straight to the end without reading details or timestamps at all, so I could sign up. LOL. I am such a lazy dick sometimes.
