Place was full of a buncha ratchet piece of shit hoodlums and hustlepuppies. Suprised nobody murdered anybody while I was there, seems like it's only a matter of time. One of my friends told me the other day that there was recently a dead guy covered in his own puke in one of the NYC subways who had been rotting there for days before anybody finally called 911. Doesn't suprise me in the least bit. Those subway tunnels are deprived of human life, the true definition of scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I know those feels, bud. I'm never again taking acid in a city when I have to find my own way back home through unfamiliar territory. It also made me realize I never want to live in any kind of densely populated area. Crowd psychology in cities is fucked up, everything feels so dehumanised and detached.

I just want to live on a vineyard in a mountain valley amongst rolling green hills, make my own wine, and hobble around through the grapevines when I'm old, smacking people with my walky stick.

Yeah, I was terrified. They left me alone though.

Last year after the Phish show in Miami I was still tripping and walked a couple blocks away from the venue. Then this slobbery drug addict found me and kept following me while crying about how he has AIDS and he was getting really close and I was afraid he would bite me. I was telling him to get away and dodging him like a football player would. I got a cab before he bit me and then the cab ride was just as scary.

I went to jail once and it was actually pretty cool. I read, played cards, and watched tv all day. I was surprised to see my friend in my cell too. They even had drugs. It was kind of like when the trailer park boys go to jail.

Buying weed and coke in a national guard's post (shack) on the beach in Jamaica

Buying weed in the back a store, in a kind of strip mall, on the beach in the Dominican Republic

A couple times I went down to Juarez for pharms,  people tried to presumably con us outside the pharmacies

Buying drugs in the hood (Especially traveling) or anywhere with guns on the table is never comfortable.

Last time I was there was like 9-10 years ago. Its the same place for sure.  That was shity club.  It was around for all of my life  and was torn down recently.

The Magick stick is a great place or was saw more then a few shows of bigger bands in that super small venue.

Harpo's was the worst venue in the city god the awful things ive seen in that club. Who would think that a club ran by a junkie neo nazi would be so shady.
The exploited played there owner didnt pay them and then they got all there equipment stolen. Had to ax rest of the us tour.

Same here, I haven't been to any really rough areas aside from briefly passing through Detroit. The most ghetto places I've been to in Canada have been native reserves I guess. Winnipeg is supposed to be pretty rough in some parts but I've never been there. The parts of Toronto that are considered relatively rough are not really all that bad IME.

I have been to a bunch of boring shit towns though.

Rock Springs, Wyoming. Some of you have probably seen me mention it several times over the years. Spent 2 years and change there on a work transfer.

It's extremely cold -- cold as in it routinely goes below zero during winter, and during my time there I experienced around two week's worth of days that saw the temp go south of 30 degrees below zero. The worst I saw was 42 below. And we're not talking wind chill here. We're talking actual Fahrenheit temperature. White out blizzard conditions were common. And the winds were some of the sharpest, most violently blowing winds I've ever encountered. Imagine pumping your gas while it's 38 below and the wind is blowing at you at 60 MPH. Dude I felt like I was going to literally freeze to death at the damn gas pump on a few occasions...you know, just lie down like this dude here and call it a life. At least I'd be warm in my coffin.

But even as cold as it was, it was weird, because the landscape is desert. It's basically a fucking desert with ice box conditions. So yeah, imagine those aesthetics. And the town is most comprised of virtually nothing but trailer homes and really cheaply made apartments. The entire town was a display of white trash living at its finest. There was as many adult video stores as there were regular video stores.

Most of the people are only there for the oil/gas/coal mining jobs, so everybody's a roughneck. Even the damn chicks. Man their chicks would kick a motherfucker's ass too, for real. Like I'm talking big, brute, trucker chicks. Chicks that will drink your fucking ass under the table and then cuss your ass out after for being a bitch. Seemed like everybody in the town stayed drunk 24/7/365. Fights were constant. Only place I've ever been where liquor stores stayed open 24 hours. Hell they had drive-thru liquor stores for fuck's sake. The best place to eat in town was a motherfucking Applebee's. Like this fucking Applebee's is where dude's brought their prom dates and anniversary dinners. To them that damn Applebee's was Ruth's Chris, some real five star luxury shit. The town was basically 98% poorly educated back country white folk too, so do the math on whether or not you'd think this little blip on the map would fit the bill as a racist town or not.

And there was really nothing in any direction for hours. Like the closest shit that actually resembled a real city/town was Salt Lake City, and SLC was like 3 hours and change away.

TL;DR: Rock Springs, WY is close to being hell (a cold hell mind you) on earth and a place where people go do die.

This was a great read Niffla

I'd really love to visit that part of the country because it looks so beautiful - but Wyoming has a quarter of the population of the city I live in . My dad lived in Greenland for a bit and even though he has stories of getting stoned and jumping off of icebergs, he said it's mostly an extremely depressing place to live and a lot of people are suicidal and take to alcohol.

As someone who grew up in Wyoming, I can assure you that the whole place is not that depressing, just certain more isolated parts.

Trap houses in the hood in NY, being one of two white people (other was my homie)

We would grab weight off this dude but the whole block was abandoned.  Boarded up windows and nothing in one of the houses but 5 black dudes, a weight bench and a bunch of drugs.  They would serve right out the windows, porch, wherever.  With dudes walking up and down the street watching while we would sit in the car and wait for dude. He would tell everyone we were all good though so no one would fuck with us or anything.  Or we would chill on the porch while we waited and smoked blunts.  People who would come up to cop probably wondered what a couple white dudes were doing in a spot like that but if we were just chillen out with dude that ran the house, we must have the pass lol.

Other spots in the hood weren't that bad, other than hustlers coming up to your window at the gas station trying to sell you shit.

I remember I had to take a shit real bad once in the hood, and every fast food place didn't have doors on their stalls.  So I went to a supermarket in a pretty bad spot, only to walk into the bathroom to a dude freestyling to himself in the mirror.  Then proceeded to ask me what I was up to, if he could get a ride around the block,  yada yada yada, hustler type shit, trying to get me for something, I could tell. While i'm standing there about to shit my pants.    I just told him the car was full (it wasn't) but he acted like I offended him, I thought I was going to have to fight this dude in a supermarket bathroom for a minute until he walked out.

There are probably a few other places I'm just not thinking of right now, but those are what came to mind.

oh yah, I don't doubt it - it looks fantastic for outdoorsy folks, and I think that most 'oil towns' are probably kinda depressing for reasons niffla described. It's pretty hard to top greenland in terms of suicidal populace too, and that's the only thing I have experience by proxy to compare that post to - 1 out of 4 people in Greenland attempts suicide at some point in their life - 6 months of almost complete darkness will do it I guess

It's so cool that we don't have to leave the country for a bit of a 'culture shock' tho, there are parts of it that are just so vastly different from what I'm used to, I'm saving up for a little bit of travel on the west coast and it's so much cheaper and easier to fly out and then rent a car, but at some point I've gotta drive my way across. seems like it's a rite of passage.

the scariest hustle puppies. It was in a horrendous section of philly, and the people running it are really NOT good people and just made me super uncomfortable, there's a whole yelp page dedicated to their terribleness(https://www.yelp.com/biz/george-smith-towing-philadelphia). Temple is ugly, and you've got to worry about armed robbery - but they've also got their own police force and shuttles and stuff like that, and they light up the area like daylight - but the school brings something to the area and is the reason why there's a supermarket and a movie theatre and everything like that there...off campus north philly gets much much scarier, southwest philly is the same.

But the funny thing about Philly is that in the heart of the southwest ghetto you have places like Bartrams Garden - the oldest botanical garden in north america.

thats gnar gnar i'll have to check that yelp link in a bit

lol @ trashy garden

sort of an odd surreal place. it's the kinda city where you really have to know where to go, it's a blast and it's a very interesting place when you start exploring it....but it also reeks of hot garbage in the summer time and has a lot of grit.

it's the oldest botanical garden in north america and it's beautiful and they sell all kinds of seeds and do cool art classes and stuff and a lot of people get married there.

Yellowstone is amazing and I've seen the most amazing lightning storm in Wyoming. The whole sky was on white fire . It was amazing and that's before i ever knew what drugs were pretty much. However during the summer round Yellowstone there are crazy big mosquitos,it's hot AF. Missouri farmland (military base area) was just as cold as Wyoming winters. We were there at the end of summer and it was at the most 20 degrees at night. Rained often .

As someone mentioned states like that often are nothing but fucking desert it seems. Not exactly desert but just ginormous stretches of dirt/sparce areas
