Downsizing on Dam's coir tek possible?
    #23524212 - 08/09/16 08:07 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hello longtime lurker making a throwaway hoping someone can help me out with a tad of advice. I'm trying to emulate Damion's 5050 https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595 my issue is that I only had one quart succeed the innoc process healthily. My question is, is it possible to divide his kit by 1/5th ingredients and try it the same way in a smaller tub with my 1 quart or is it possible to salvage the successful quarter of spawn in some other way that may be more effective? Its popcorn based if that matters. Thanks for reading.

Yes you can reduce the ratios and it will still work. However coir lasts for nearly forever so if you ever plan to do it again, I would just prep a bucket and use it as you need.

Thank you for the response so quick man! So, if I understand you correctly. Your advice would be to create the whole recipe and just store the bucket and re-add boiling water when I'm next ready to use it? Or you're saying slice a piece of coir of the brick like butter and save it til I need it? Sorry first time not doing birthday cakes every facet is new to me lol

Just make the buckets worth and use it when needed. Nothing else. Coir stays good forever. If it dries out you may need to add a bit more water. But that won't happen if you keep the lid on the bucket.

Sorry I forgot one last question, how many inches of the coir/verm do I put down into the tub? 2"? 3"? Way more? Couldn't find this in the teks anywhere. And for the FAE later I want about half inch sized holes correct? I know to duct tape and polyfill accordingly just cant find the sizing for the holes anywhere?

from the OP (2nd paragraph in post)

Tub volume and shape
I have a few different tubs that I use. There are a few things to keep in mind. First is height. No matter what, you want enough height to fruit in. My 20 quart mini's are pretty short, about 8.5". But I only have a 2.5"-3" sub in it. Enough to do 2 quarts spawn and 3 quarts sub for a 1:1.5 ratio.

(..)
I also like my 30 quart tub, its taller and longer. I use 3 quarts spawn and 4-6 quarts sub with usually brings it to 2.5-3"

Hello everyone, here with an update. It might be worth mentioning know I was using only one qt of spawn not sure if that means it could take longer or if it just took so long that it stalled permanently. My monotub definitely started to have some colonization and the top layer is almost completely white, the parts of the coir and sub under the top are kind of webbed and still look like they are trying to congeal around and meet each other. The top layer of the tub has all white like strands like pin looking stands, not pins that I'm familiar with to be starting mush pins. These have more of a consistency of like grass but are white and sticking up like spike. In one corner of the tub there appears to be some knotting. My question is I know it's been quite some time since I initiated the tub. I thought that if it colonizes successfully it will basically make everything in the tub white like the myc more or less and right now there is still visible coir and brown from the sides. I believe my tub is about 2 weeks old now. Did it stall from contams or did I fail something likely? Or is it likely ready to be put into fruiting? Any insight is appreciated, can get a pic but the info is pretty depictive. Once again the whole top layer has what looks like white pinny grass but the sides appear to not be congealed with myc. Any info would be appreciated and can give pics on request but prefer not to

A single pic will tell us 100 times more than that wall of text. You trying to describe what you're looking at is like a grade four student trying to perform surgery over the phone with a surgeon.

So yeah Dr. I cut him open and there is a lot of red stuff and some noodles or something. That sound right to you?

Pics are everything.

This is exactly what I always imagine when you use this analogy.
