Panaeolus cinctulus/subbalteatus?
    #23523392 - 08/08/16 09:57 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Found many of these growing in a football field near university. They look like the pictures I have been able to find online but it looks like there can be alot of variation in how this species looks

spore print is black

thanks in advance for your help

The look more like foes to me, but I must say the print appears black.

The colours in the spore print picture are way-off, mind you, by which I mean the photo seems to be leaning towards the blue end of the spectrum.

A larger picture(s) with sunlight or white light would help immensely. I see two possible cincts I dunno about the others.

The picture of the mushrooms themselves won't expand, which makes it hard to say for sure if they are Panaeolus/PanaeolAt at all, they also look like they might be a, Psathyrella species.

Panaeolina foenisecii unless the print is blacker than it looks to me.

So the consensus is they are most likely Panaeolina foenisecii? Good to know. The darkest print looked pretty black to me but the lighter ones looked like they could have been more dark purple than black. Thanks for your help guys I really appreciate it

Protip. When printing pans keep a black sharpie handy and draw a line next to the print on bright white paper. That'll give you an answer better than we can see on our screens.

I tried to reduce some of the blueness. Not sure how accurate my result is.

@Adden thats a great idea. Will keep that in mind for next time.

@elprawn From what I recall that looks pretty accurate. Unfortunately I fed the print and the mushrooms to my composting worms shortly after taking the second picture. They're are more out there though and probably many more to come

If it makes you feel any better, they may not have been active, and even if they were, I'm not sure those five would have done a great deal.

No worries here. Never tried to ID an active species in the wild before. I really just wanted to know for curiosity's sake. My first cubensis grow is moving along without a hitch, if all continues to go well i'll have more active fungi than i need.

Thanks again!

Also when working with dark spored species, I've noticed that printing rather on a foil than on a paper shows you better the differences between black, dark purple and brown spore prints and no black sharpie is needed. Also better when working with white spored species.

Yeppers. I always used foil. When I was new to picking I got a few white ones. I printed on paper once and it was to frame a piece of paper with mixed purple-black/tan/dark tan azure spores all collected from the same area. It came out gorgeous I wish I had used a heavier stock.

Obviously if you're printing on tin foil, you'll need a camera capable of photographing it without using flash, otherwise you'll get a crappy reflection/glare.

It's a mixed collection of one Panaeolina foenisecii (light colored stipe) and four Panaeolus cinctulus.
