Lighting
    #23523041 - 08/08/16 08:15 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I have been growing for a couple years now.

How important is lighting when it comes to a 12hr schedule of light and darkness.

I have always grown in a closet with a light hung upside down that has a hanger attached to it.

Thinking about growing my monotubes in a completely open room and let natural sunlight work its magic.

I love alone and having anything exposed in the wide open is not a problem anymore. Thank god

Back in the day I have neglected my grows for a day or two with or without light and havnt been able to make a difference.

Does light play a big part?

It's important but not nearly as much as fresh air exchange and high humidity. In my experience it mostly helps them orient them figure out which direction to grow

At this point more people are calling them monotubes than the proper term, it's starting to look like a losing battle..

Monotubes? :laugh2: screw this forum section

Light is beneficial to mycelium at every stage of development. It is NOT a pinning trigger, change in FAE is. I did a grow without artificial light and just the small specs of light coming in through the window, the grow went absolutely fine.

I am actually thinking of eliminating artificla light from my grows as well. I think light is useful in situations where light can not enter in any other possible way, such as underground grows

Since I used artificial lighting (CFL) I've noted markedly better performance. Could be the skill curve too but light ain't just a afterthought

I really don't mean to high jack your thread but the title made me curious and I now I'm wondering if it is ok that I leave my light on 24/7. It's just a compact fluorescent and I have been leaving it on all the time. Again if I was rude by posting on your thread please disregard my ignorance.

Well, look at it this way.  There's no rule you can't ask an irrelevant question in a person's thread.  But there IS a rule against asking questions that have been asked a million times without looking it up yourself.

24 is better than 0 but not as good as 12/12.  If you're fine with cutting corners go ahead and make all your own rules.  Otherwise, sticking to the tried and true is probably better.

Nonetheless I don't mind growing with the sun instead of artificial. It does take some planning tho on where to position them so they have direct sunlight as it sets, but it's awesome that the tubs generally get 1-3 hours of sunlight as the sun is setting.

It's a monotub haha

It's a monolithic substrate/cultivation (whatever you want to call it) grown in a plastic tub

I have a big problem with overheating tubs tho. dunno if its because I'm so far north too but its impossible to get 12 hrs bright light using only the sun. Might have been easier was it not for neighboors tho.

either way you do it get some light on your mushrooms, you'll see a major difference especially on caps.

I didn't say no light at all, aka darkness, just that CFL may be not that a big deal of a requirement, that's all I meant. I've had successful grows with just normal sunlight, not direct sunlight but rather just light. I started my sentence with ''light is beneficial to mycelium during all stages''

Personally I would use CFL in underground grows, such as burried shipping containers/basements/cellars...etc The rest I use sunlight, it's cheaper and a lot better

Wait what are you talking about?  The lid?  Most things that come with a lid in mycology should have the lid on.  Are we talking about a fruiting chamber here or something else?

If your lid is a solid color, like light can not pierce through it, substitute it with something else. My MONOTUBES (:lol: what a fucking ridiculous term ) that had a solid colored lid I replaced with a sheet of glass.

What some people also do is buy a strip of white/blue LEDS and run it through the tub. LEDs are nice and very low wattage so if you wanna be economical and still use artificial light that's the way to go

CFLs are cheaper and seems to work better. I've never seen anything but noobs with air pumps and shit hooked onto their FCs use LED strips.
Heard a lot of talk but no results

What I really wanna know is why I cant learn to just stay out of these lighting threads
