Air pump water filter?
    #2352262 - 02/18/04 10:36 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hi. I want to use a couple of air pumps I have to provide air flow for my aquarium. I am using air stones and hydroton. I'm paranoid about environmental contaminants, so I may include a water filter between the air stones and the pumps. This may sound redundant, since the air stones are under water, but the layer of water they sit under is very shallow, and thus provide minimal filtration. I'm thinking a water bottle filled almost full of H2o2 and water with a tube from the air pump descending to the bottum and an outlet siliconed into the cap would provide alot of filtering for the air. I don't have a HEPA filter, so I'm thinking this may help provide somewhat clean air for the aquarium.
Basically it's a reverse bong set inline with the air pump.

Any thoughts?

bongs rock!

Don't sweat the sterility (or lack thereof) of the terrarium to much. They aren't meant to be 100% sterile.

What you have in mind should be more than ample at sustaining nice fruits.

if you do want to filter the airstream you can use a film can and polyfil to make one...drill a hole through it and stick hoses in...

Most pet supply stores sell these little in-line air filters to put between the air pump and the aquarium. They're pretty cheap (1-2 bucks a piece). Basically, they're about an inch long plastic canister with poly-fil looking filter stuff in the middle. Makes one want to cram a little poly-fil in your air hose instead.

Additionally, I try to filter the air that the air pump takes up. What I did was get a shoe-box-sized rubbermaid container and drill 3/4" holes on each side, stuff those with poly-fil. I also drilled smaller holes for the air lines to pass through, sealing up the gaps with expanding foam. You put your airpump inside this rubbermaid, and voila!

Probably doesn't clean everything out, but i'm sure it helps a little, especially when coupled with the in-line filters described above. As someone mentioned above, sterility is not paramount once cakes are colonized (I actually did this more to cut down on noise from the air pump)...Good luck.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will take this all into consideration, but I'll probably scrap the reverse bong idea and go with polyfill.
