How much lux/fc can a straw log take?
    #23522494 - 08/08/16 05:15 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I'm thinking about removing some roof panels on the fruiting chamber and replacing them with a sunroof that only
lets partial light come through.  Noon day sun is around 11,000 fc, and this shaded pvc panel lets 3000 of it through.

How much can a colonizing log takes before I start to melt the mycelium?

I would say more of a question of how much heat not light. That would depend on mushroom variety.

Sunlight has infrared radiation which translates to heat on on surface of the log, so fc/lux is relevant.
I don't care about ambient temperatures being raised, I have ventilation to prevent that from happening.

Oysters are one of the more light tolerant . Recommend 1000-1500 lux during fruiting. Like I said depends on variety. Also if grown in plastic logs direct light on plastic can create greenhouse effect and raise temp of log substantially. Ambient and substrate temps can be two separate things. You would have approx 30,000 lux .

P. Ostreatus,

Have you tried fruiting them in low light conditions?
If so how did effect your yield?

It'd be easier for me to stay with low amounts of light, so I'm curious..

The numbers I used were Stamets . I guess you would have to look for research on lighting effects on oysters. I have extensive knowledge of greenhouses (plants). Just seems easier to have complete control of light especially with LEDs so economical to purchase and power. Just my two cents.
