Reishi? Gonna clone it!

Just noticed this in my neighbor's yard growing off the base of a tree where it had been cut back ages ago. Is it possibly reishi, maybe someone growing in the hood and some spores "took root"? Seems unlikely. Other ganoderma grow here just not sure about Lucidum. The stalk on the larger of the two is about an inch in diameter and is very far shiny red. I'm gonna attempt to clone it. Thoughts on agar medium?

Here's a pic of the underside. Did the pileus and hymenium grow and fuse around the stipe or is this simply not g lucidum? Thoughts?

Maybe you could put on ID board to get a consensus?

Thanks, foraged! Just like Mrcloudy said, it can be near impossible to ID these things in the wild visually (species) due to the variety of morphologies. I'll culture it up using mea and dfa and see what it looks like as it develops.
Quad - will do!

Hey anthiawe, I didn't know that! What have you found? I'm making my way through old threads but haven't found the agar recipes yet...any recommendations? Thanks for the heads-up! I'll ask Mrcloudy over in th ID forum as well!

I had just been looking around at some of those cool reishi monotub grows, thinking of trying it, and had been reading lots of different info on reishi. i'll take a look around and if i find anything about its growth on agar will post a link.

I have no idea if there's a picture library or not of mycelium on agar pictures. However, reishi mycelium looks and behaves like most other mushroom mycelium. There really is no way macroscopically to tell one mycelium from another with any degree of certainty. RR
my worries were unfounded! go for it! good luck!

Thanks, anth! I plated up some tissue last night on mea and dfa. I'm using benefuls in the dfa and it has a ton of stuff in it...hydrolyzed veg and meat proteins (peptone), grains, oatmeal, vitamins and minerals. Seems like a pretty solid list and may make a good all around medium as long as the dog food is used around 1-2%. Any more and it's too nutritive.

Here's one of the TCs. It's producing extremely fine and aggressive hyphae. Anyone who's cultured any ganoderma species familiar with their growth? Does it thicken up? Anyway, seems to be liking the mea over the dfa.
