are these even edible?

This summer has been the most discouraging experience ever with only 30% of any of my cakes ever making it to birthing. I just need to know if i should toss the cake or eat these or what.

Those look like they dried out, then got soaked, then aborted, and are now rotting. Personally I wouldn't eat those.

I feel you, I lost an entire mono. They pinned and then all of a sudden started looking like that demonic shit. I plucked every abort there is, soaked the mono, hoping for a second flush but nope, triched out in a few days
Those look horrendous, throw them out

I would throw away that cake cause right now it's a risk factor on your other cakes. Also, cause of the heat, try to ensure you have good FAE. That's what fucked me up the most and was most likely the reason for a whole flush aborting

The cake might be okay. Just get them nasty fruits off and see if it produces.

no need for a humidifier if you build your SGFC correctly and live anywhere but Antarctica

Why don't you make a monotub instead of an SGFC? That way the polyfill could help retain some of that humidity

Ive actually been considering this but monos seem intimidating to me despite the amount of reading ive done. Im worried about how long it will take to "dial in" when i know my grows will go back to normal after the heat wave is gone. Im open to suggested reading but i havent had the funds to move onto a PC and agar yet

It really isn't that hard and you're just over thinking it. Dailing in your mono takes like 2 mins tops. I started off with monotubs and bulk grow straight from the get go. If I can do it so can you

Thank you for the encouragement its been a morale destroying summer. 2 mins tops? Ive been avoiding it because there are literally entire teks devoted to "dialing in" monos.

In practice it isn't as complicated as the TEKs make it seem, honestly. Don't feel intimidated, not even by failure, it's part of the learning process

I wouldn't fruit cakes in a mono though, they don't have enough moisture inside them to retain enough humidity and microclimate without misting every second, something that is especially so if you don't fill the mono completely with them.
That said, I think monos are easier to work with as well but this is because of the extra water the bulk sub supplies. Grains and bulk is easier than cakes IMHO.

DITTO
I was more thinking of a tray sort of fashion rather than just individual cakes, which I guess can be easily arranged by crushing them and packing them in to oven trays. If you pack the mono enough with trays/cakes and tighten the holes on top as well I think there will be enough humidity with a few mistings here and there.
I'm actually going to test this and see how I go. I got a bunch of colonized jars from the winter that I haven't used and I plan just that, spawn into individual trays, pack the mono with as much trays as it can handle and see from there

With trays spawned to bulk, it wouldn't be a problem. I've had monos with a single tray in them perform normally. Cakes are dense though, I doubt crumbling them is enough, they still need to be spawned to something. I think I saw a cake grow in a mono before but like I said, needs to be pretty packed for it to not lose surface water every 5 minutes.

I know what you mean, click the link in my signature, it lays out monotubs in 3 steps. I did research for a few months and its all about finding the right thread that you think will work for you. Someone on here may have a "better" tek for monotubs but what I do works (it has worked for hundreds if not thousands of others by now) and I use the same formula as Pasty (650g coir, 5 quarts spawn, 3 quarts verm, 5 quarts of water) but of course he is using superior mycelium no doubt (which nets him higher BE and overall yield), however I grow more then I can eat/giveaway with just two tubs going so I am definitely happy with my MS grows so far.
Once you go mono you never go back
