Empathy
    #23521930 - 08/08/16 12:41 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

"“under the present brutal and primitive conditions on this planet, every person you meet should be regarded as one of the walking wounded. we have never seen a man or woman not slightly deranged by either anxiety or grief. we have never seen a totally sane human being.”

Robert Anton Wilson

How true do you think this statement is?

And does it give you the feels?

A lot of people are a great example of overcoming the scary things in life.  Somehow people carry on.

I agree with old Bob.  I feel that, by this point, in this world, neurosis is near-universal.  Whoever doesn't suffer from it, to some degree, well, they'd be a freak, anyway.

At a very basic level, when you put an animal in a cage, its mental (and physical) integrity begins to disintegrate.  And we're all in cages of some form or another.

I was feeling similar sentiments,

a totally sane human being as described by Wilson in this day and age might seem quite insane to we the wounded..

it also seems to be a call for the reader to realize the degree with which lifes 'wounds' affect us, however unconsciously, and to consciously do something about it.

I get the point.  But does sane vs insane even have any meaning anymore?

People are emotional beings.  They naturally act on those emotions.  Grief and anxiety are a part of the human condition, yes.  That is why people can have empathy.  Everyone can relate on some level.  Not having empathy is a sign of "insanity" anyway, to bring it full circle, wtf am I talking about?

It does not give me the feels.  This is something I recognize daily.  I would say I'm beyond being needed to be reminded that humans all experience grief and anxiety, and are capable of empathy.  It's common sense to me.

I suppose that depends on the person, insane and sane are value judgements relative to the observers prejudices.

"The Feels"?

No, actually that dude seems quite preachy.  Makes me feel a bit queasy.  I don't like preachers.

Then the bit about walking wounded, anxiety and grief.  Yeah, so what?  And who the fuck is this we?  RAW and his herd of peaceful whatever they are?  I mean, who made this guy the judge?  I hate judgmental people.  Mean people suck.  Try A Little Tenderness, RAW red rough and sore...

if you spend 15 minutes in the New York Subway system you will see
that the average person actually has a lot of respect and empathy for and with their fellows.

I am enchanted with New York

Empathy is signified as feeling with another but a lot of the time this isn't helpful for anyone.

E.g. If a friend is sad and crying it's not going to make the situation better if you start feeling sad and crying too.

Sympathy for the struggles of another is enough.

When in NY, I walk.  I walk fast.  Your version of respect and empathy is herd mentality of protection in a group in a dangerous situation, help your herd member.  Respect?  OK, you stay enchanted with that sweaty smelly nasty city.

I disagree. Sanity and insanity have been terms that change so often depending on the times. What's sane in one time is insane in another.

The ego of most doctors is only a slight bit less than their bloated bills.  Last doctor I went to brilliantly told me that the human body either absorbs or rejects that splinter I had in my side.  I cut the fucker out with a box cutter.  Should have done it right away, and no I don't need your tetanus shot "booster".

When you get a puncture wound, prepare for surgery earlier rather than wait for the rusty nail to fester.  Festering, isn't good.  Just suck it up, take out your box cutter, maybe sterilize it with your lighter, then dig in. Cut cut cut.

Great point! Most of what is called "mental illness" today has not been viewed as abnormal in the past.

When little Johnny was restless and fidgety in school in 1800, nobody said he had a mental illness.

But now he's given drugs to alter his abnormal behavior, under the guise of fixing a biological defect.

I agree with the statement and it's general message.

The problem is that everyone has different perspectives and they're all (mostly) equally valid. So even if I agree with this statement, someone else might not. As a result, even if I treat someone well, someone else might be a total dick. In the end, we're at a stalemate of kindness vs. assholes.

No one is kind or an asshole all the time, so that makes it even harder to really change the way humanity as a whole treats one another because no one is really consistent in how they treat others.

We really need to grow the fuck up and mature as an entire species IMO.

I lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan for almost 5 years, and having spent many hours on subway cars, I can attest to this. Oddly enough, these sardine cans seem to bring it out more often than not.

My experience happened to be the complete opposite there and quite frankly everywhere else. Such rules only apply to those who are "normal", if you're weird then no one gives a damn.

I think it's true.

But the real question is why.

I would answer.  "Because humanity has relinquished its relationships with its unconscious existence."

Meaning the crusades epigenetically removed what humanity needs to live full
lives with real freedom or Independence and hope based in a complete reality.

Freedom and independence are myths. Even a full life is little more than a vague concept. It's impossible to know what is truly "sane". It's nothing more than public opinion.
