Spores in Earth Worm Bin
    #23521876 - 08/08/16 12:23 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

So there's a worm bin I started back in early spring that has processed along quite well.  I had not peeked in on it for quite some time, but had inoculated with lactic acid bacillus serum months ago just to help it along.  Checked in on it today to find it had reduced in volume considerably, moisture content was good, and worms were active.  For the sake of science and all things good, I added some spores in multiple locations.  This will be interesting to see how it develops.  My only concern is that the potential mycelium does not consume my living worms in the process.  Honestly it is worthwhile to me to see nature take action on these processed kitchen scraps that would've otherwise been tossed into a landfill. This is a curious experiment. Please feel free to advise or share your own expertise or opinions.  I have no intention on killing my worms, the bin is set for them to move out if they don't like their environment or want food from a different bin.  Adding beneficial microbes and reducing waste is the theme here.  If there are additional benefits along the way, they're welcomed.

Spores likely won't even germinate in that environment.

try a jar of colonized WBS.  You may be surprised.  Just be careful it doesn't get too dry in the heat this time of year.

Cool, no expertise here- just fun and good for the environment too.

I'm kinda into the vermi/ permaculture thing too. I've been putting my spent mycelium cakes into my worm bin- doesn't phase them. I had a bunch of mushrooms growing out of it this morning.

Since it's an outdoor bin I don't know if they're resurrected from the mycelia or just from random local spores floating around.

Spores may very well germinate because of the nutrition available.  This bin has the full spectrum of food scraps from our kitchen plus added minerals in the form of glacial rock dust.  What would spores germinate on in the wild?  While there might not be grain per say, I reckon there's enough varied substances that something will take somewhere.

When I have spent or colonized grains to add to bins, I'm definitely up for trying that out.

This will be fun to see develop.  I probably won't check on it for a couple of weeks since there wouldn't be much to see yet.

That's awesome.  Thank you! I will definitely do this.  I love hiking in nature, so this is perfect.

In the wild horses and cows drink the spores.
