Do mottled gills mean its safe to eat?
    #23521122 - 08/08/16 04:35 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Are there any mushrooms that can make you sick that have mottled gills? Are panaeolus and panaeolina the only genus that have this feature? Can mottled gills be a determining factor?

I've been searching the internet and I see that the genus Lacrymaria has mottled gills, but they look quite different than panaeolus species. Especially when you look at the girth of the stipes...

I know positive ID is important, I just wanna know if ever theres a chance I mess up my id on pan. subbs. but the mushroom does indeed have brown to black naked eye visible mottled gills (tiny specs or spots of darker spores which have matured faster than the rest), will it do any harm?

Most mushrooms with mottled gills are safe to eat, but not all of them.  Here is a toxic mushroom with mottled gills:

Thanks Alan, that upskirt of the mushroom in yourpicture sure as hell resembles panaeolus. I looked up the spore print for that mushroom and I read its not black. This might be a dumb follow up question but can it be safe to assume that all mushrooms with brown to black mottled gills that spore a hard jet black are safe?
