reposting this in mush cult because i think more people here are working with manure than in the guormet forum...
I just shoveled a shit load (pun intended) of alpaca and goat manure out of a barn. Theres a lot of straw and wood shavings (probably pine) mixed in. It pretty much looks like wet, black, sludgy straw. It also has an ammonia-like smell to it and im sure theres urine mixed in there too. I want to use it to grow portobellos. Does it need to age? leech? dry? ... what do I have to do to get this stuff ready to grow on?
and alpaca and goat manure is ok right?

Hey I was curious about growing portobellos with manure too. How's that going, having you tried it yet? From my little knowledge with manure you probably do need to leech it though.
Have you checked out the poop 101 page yet? https://www.shroomery.org/8395/Using-poo-101

Generally, for any type of dung loving active, any degree of ammonia smell is a no-go. In the past, people used to search for poo that had visible firefang, which is a bacteria that only grows once the ammonia is leached away. This was a good sign for people to know that their poo can be used. Nowadays any poo that has been sun dried is said to be properly leached, I have personally picked up poo that wasn't entirely dry on the inside but had no ammonia smell whatsoever so I used it and it still did well.
As far as your poop coming from a different animal, if they are eating straw, grains and basically the same stuff a horse or a cow would eat, it should be good for any dung loving mushroom.
BTW, what the hell is alpaca?

I lol'd at this quote and had to use it Quote:

A lot of times in stalls tho they will use cedar, which has anti-fungal properties, some pine and straw probably wouldn't hurt just make sure they don't use cedar bedding.

Alpacas and llamas are closely related I'm guessing? Which one chews cud and spits it at you?
