Worst places you've ever been? * 1
    #23520857 - 08/08/16 12:27 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

1.NYC subway tunnels, pretty self-explanitory. Got a bit lost while tripping on acid at like 1am in the grimey hellhole tunnels and stations last winter. Place was full of a buncha ratchet piece of shit hoodlums and hustlepuppies. Suprised nobody murdered anybody while I was there, seems like it's only a matter of time. One of my friends told me the other day that there was recently a dead guy covered in his own puke in one of the NYC subways who had been rotting there for days before anybody finally called 911. Doesn't suprise me in the least bit. Those subway tunnels are deprived of human life, the true definition of scraping the bottom of the barrel.

2. Philadelphia, was chillin at a college for the weekend. The college itself was nice, but the area around it was also full of a buncha ratchet piece of shit hoodlums and hustlepuppies

3. Charleston, South Carolina. Really aesthetically beautiful city with tons of well-dressed people and a surplus of gorgeous women. I went to a club while there and it was the most insincere place i've ever been in my entire life. I was surrounded by all of these fake pieces of spoiled trash, there wasn't a single genuine interaction that went on between anybody in that club that night, i'm sure of it. It was all a gag, an act, a conspiracy. Everybody was putting on a front. Never been to a club before it, and never going to another one ever again either. Knew getting dragged out to that shit was a terrible idea, taught me to stop trusting other people's blind excuses of what they consider to be good judgement. I'm just glad my female friends made it out of there without getting roofied and raped, although we did have one tagalong who followed us out of the club after & we had to shoo away because his penis was popping boners like the fake molly everybody was probably popping in there.

4. The bahamas after dark outside of our resort. I was in Middle School or so at the time on a family vacation there. I asked my dad why he didn't want us to re-up on milk at 11 at night and he decided to bring me with him and teach me a valuable lesson, that islands are ran by gangs of hoodlums & hustlepuppies.

Those are some of the worst places i've ever been, wbu?

haha, so many hustlepuppies!

LAX airport was pretty shitty cause of all the con artist hustlers there.

Also, been near Oakland aka "Oak Town". That place is rough. Definitely not going there any time soon.

Other than that, every where else has been pretty good

Worst as in shadiest? LA, Dallas or Miami.

Tamest for a big city, Seattle, maybe somewhere in Europe

Not really one for hanging out in the ghetto though.

Bad places in L.A.,Puerto Rico and Oakland were the most ghetto. And Missouri farm lands , Idaho farmland (most farmland),south dokota, north dokota, "the great salt late" aka hell on earth during summer.

Decided to stray from the trail in a very remote area of the woods. Got somewhat lost and my blood sugar went low (t1 diabetes). Had very few sugary things to bring it back up, alone with just my dog. Managed to find the trail and got the hell out. Fun times.

Not the worst place in maybe the way you're talking about, but still pretty sketchy.

I second Puerto Rico.  In San Juan there were police almost on every corner on Coronado at night, and I saw a couple thugs pass us rifling through a purse I assume they just stole.

I lived in the Barrio in Bakersfield.  There were a lot of gangster cartel types, homeless mentally ill, and stray dogs to worry about when you stepped outside.

Lived in Dominica, which is a super poor tiny Caribbean island where I was mugged.  All the expats said it was part of the initiation to be either mugged or have your house burglarized.

I lived in Dorchester in Boston.  People would regularly mean mug me when I walked down the street as a white dude.  There were knifings on the corner outside my window.  a 14 yr old boy was shot in the street two blocks away.

South Boston and the surrounding burrows. It can be either way though, one day someone might let you know you've got 100$ hanging out ur back pocket, the next day someone might steal your car

Brockton sucks, it's all cape verdians.
Fall River sucks.

Everywhere in Florida sucks.
Chicago can get pretty hairy at night.
A lot of the Dominic is scary all the time.

When my dad was living in Ethiopia, he would wake up in the morning to dead children in the streets. If the patrols didn't pick them up in time the wild dogs would come in from the plains and drag the body's away.
To get into the palace (where the kids from overseas would attend classes and mothers a safe place while fathers worked) you had to walk between two unchained male lions.

People would be beaten in the streets for no apparent reason, left to die.
Families would be pulled aside on the street and gunned down.
Children helplessly watched there mothers get beaten, raped and murdered.

I've never been though it just made sense to bring it up I guess.

Some Atlanta ghettos I would buy dope in, the bluff especially, but I read that they recently have been trying to bring new life to the bluff because it's been a notorious heroin spot since the 70's, so is in shambles and needs a new image, good luck with that guys.

I have heard gunshots and the whizz of bullets in the air on two occasions there, the sounds bullets make going through the air is unmistakable, and freaky.  Also there were many junkies there, who I would help out if I could, some were from the bluff, some were from other counties and only there for dope, but I sure met some unique people there.

Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Alabama, and Florida have some total shit hole places which made me question what I was doing there, I guess every place has a shit show though.

When I was on dope I didn't mind being around that type of living, because it felt real to me, unlike the cookie cutter, white picket fence act that many people live.  Now I look back on all that and am so grateful I am no longer around that day in and day out.

When I was an early teen I got my first herb charge, got sent to a boot camp in a shit town in Florida which was 45 mins north of panama city, place was hell to say the least.

But  as far as cities go . Detroit in the 90's early 2000's was no joke.  So much fuckery.  Only place ive every had a naked crack head try to car jack me  with his nudity.....

Used to goto bars when I was  13 there.  You pay the cover and you can see over the bar you were good. Used to goto this goth club/ industrial  place that was on top of a really seedy hotel. One time I was there with a buddy he was getting drinks from these old dudes. I told him it wasn't a good idea. I was there to dance and grab ass so I left him to his own devices........

Found him passed out around 3 am. fairly large club.  He was out cold like slap him and nothing. I think i was 17 then carried him back to my honda  had a city of Detroit police car roll up on us. Looked at us laughed and drove toward the casino.

Topika KS is a silly place too....

Went to a locals only bar in the shady part of town when I was in the Philippines last. Place was packed to the brim with locals leering at a girl im 99% certain was underage who was completely naked doing her best to cover herself modestly and was clearly not enjoying herself. No banter going on in the bar, no conversation, very quiet, all just staring intently at this girl. Took a seat in the corner wondering what the fuck i was doing there, copping the stink eye from everyone around. Got a message about 10 minutes later from a bud i went there with that there was gonna be trouble if we stuck around, so promptly finished my drink and high tailed it outta there. Foreigner got stabbed nearby only a week earlier so wasnt too keen to find out what 'trouble' meant.

Rock Springs, Wyoming. Some of you have probably seen me mention it several times over the years. Spent 2 years and change there on a work transfer.

It's extremely cold -- cold as in it routinely goes below zero during winter, and during my time there I experienced around two week's worth of days that saw the temp go south of 30 degrees below zero. The worst I saw was 42 below. And we're not talking wind chill here. We're talking actual Fahrenheit temperature. White out blizzard conditions were common. And the winds were some of the sharpest, most violently blowing winds I've ever encountered. Imagine pumping your gas while it's 38 below and the wind is blowing at you at 60 MPH. Dude I felt like I was going to literally freeze to death at the damn gas pump on a few occasions...you know, just lie down like this dude here and call it a life. At least I'd be warm in my coffin.

But even as cold as it was, it was weird, because the landscape is desert. It's basically a fucking desert with ice box conditions. So yeah, imagine those aesthetics. And the town is most comprised of virtually nothing but trailer homes and really cheaply made apartments. The entire town was a display of white trash living at its finest. There was as many adult video stores as there were regular video stores.

Most of the people are only there for the oil/gas/coal mining jobs, so everybody's a roughneck. Even the damn chicks. Man their chicks would kick a motherfucker's ass too, for real. Like I'm talking big, brute, trucker chicks. Chicks that will drink your fucking ass under the table and then cuss your ass out after for being a bitch. Seemed like everybody in the town stayed drunk 24/7/365. Fights were constant. Only place I've ever been where liquor stores stayed open 24 hours. Hell they had drive-thru liquor stores for fuck's sake. The best place to eat in town was a motherfucking Applebee's. Like this fucking Applebee's is where dude's brought their prom dates and anniversary dinners. To them that damn Applebee's was Ruth's Chris, some real five star luxury shit. The town was basically 98% poorly educated back country white folk too, so do the math on whether or not you'd think this little blip on the map would fit the bill as a racist town or not.

And there was really nothing in any direction for hours. Like the closest shit that actually resembled a real city/town was Salt Lake City, and SLC was like 3 hours and change away.

TL;DR: Rock Springs, WY is close to being hell (a cold hell mind you) on earth and a place where people go do die.

Oh, and basically any hardcore inner-city ghetto from any major city would apply here in this thread. Shit in inner-city Detroit, just beyond downtown the cops will straight up tell you to run the red lights when it gets late. I mean yeah look both ways and shit, but take off as soon as it's safe.

And here in Dallas the roughest area of the city is probably the Fair Park area, and it's fucking third world over there.

It was ridiculous, Logic. I had to drive back into the remote hills like 75 miles outside of town, at like 5 AM, and the landscape would be completely white and the temp read in front of me by the gauges would be like minus 30 whatever...I swear if I didn't know any better I'd think I was in the north pole or some shit

Baltimore City Ghettos...used to by coke at a place where I can't believe I'm still alive. Also, New Orleans ghetto,Philadelphia ghetto, Atlanta....the list keeps going. When I was jonesing on coke and ventured into some very sketchy places. One place in New Orleans...dude put a loaded revolver on the table in front of me as he was measuring my 8 ball. I was the only white guy in the room and I had no idea where I was. They could have robbed me and killed me but because I was an out of town business dude ...I guess, they wouldn't want the cops coming down on them ...I was just really lucky on more than one occasion....This was in the 80's and 90's.

Never been anywhere really bad, just shitty/boring blue collar towns in butt-fuck nowhere, not dangerous or anything. As far as cities, Athens is pretty grimy, the only good thing about it is the museum and acropolis. Crete was super poor too but didn't bother me, it was poor in a kind of quaint way, except the shit roads...

Pretty sure iv been to the goth place you are talking about. It was in this hotel that looked like it was abandoned. They were playing techno when i went though. I forgot what the place was called, this was like 4 years ago.

And here in Dallas the roughest area of the city is probably the Fair Park area, and it's fucking third world over there.

Never been but I remember hearing years ago, I think it was on 20/20 or some shit, that Cite Soleil (Haiti) was considered the most dangerous, and most impoverished place on earth. At least at the time anyway.

Basically law & order doesn't exist there, or didn't at that time as far as I knew. There was no such thing as police in Cite Soleil. Rape, murder, and violent assault was beyond rampant. Life is worth very little to people in a place like that.

Y'all should check this out sometime if you get a chance -- it's a brutally revealing documentary on the gang takeover there. Like I said life ain't worth shit in a place like that...walk through there with an old model shitty smartphone and that would be way more than enough for one of those dudes to run up on you and put a cap in your head and leave you lying there in the street, meanwhile dude is running off with your Galaxy S1 thinking he just won the powerball lottery

I knew immediately you were talking about temple from the way you described it.

That area of philly sucks, the medical campus which is like half a mile north of the main one is even worse sorry you guys had to hang out there.
The area around Penn and Drexel's campus(or any of the colleges in center city obviously) is so much nicer and there's way more to do in the immediate area.

As for me...probably Honduras - though the islands off the coast of it are nice the mainland can be a mess.

ain't no party like a third world party.

also southwest philly at a tow yard, and camden, nj...which is basically the third world.

the indian reserve not far from where I live... was doing some insulation in some new houses being built there.. now, I got no racism in me, but holy shit what a fucking dump... and here i am wearing a blue bandanna around my forehead because that's the only place the insulation makes me burn, all of a sudden the contractor comes in in a bit of a panic saying "dude, you need to take that off right now or your gonna get fucking shot, no joke"... apparently if I was wearing a red one it woulda been peachy keen... they thought I was a rival gang member

the scariest hustle puppies. It was in a horrendous section of philly, and the people running it are really NOT good people and just made me super uncomfortable, there's a whole yelp page dedicated to their terribleness(https://www.yelp.com/biz/george-smith-towing-philadelphia). Temple is ugly, and you've got to worry about armed robbery - but they've also got their own police force and shuttles and stuff like that, and they light up the area like daylight - but the school brings something to the area and is the reason why there's a supermarket and a movie theatre and everything like that there...off campus north philly gets much much scarier, southwest philly is the same.

But the funny thing about Philly is that in the heart of the southwest ghetto you have places like Bartrams Garden - the oldest botanical garden in north america.

sort of an odd surreal place. it's the kinda city where you really have to know where to go, it's a blast and it's a very interesting place when you start exploring it....but it also reeks of hot garbage in the summer time and has a lot of grit.

Wonder how many people got AIDS there  used to do the hooks in the back thing. Ah when no fucks where ever given place is closed and tore down. One of the nurses in the nut house used to goto the same places asked what was still around :smuglook:

Buying drugs in random parts of Detroit were some of the most dangerous places I've been. One time there was even shots fired. Then once I got lost down there and was running out of gas quick. I looked down the block from this gas station and all the street lights were shot out and none of the houses had their electricity turned on. There were about 40 or 50 gang bangers in the street and I really had no choice but to stop and get gas.

Lousisana, Alabama, and Texas also deserve a mention. I don't know why anyone would live there

I know those feels, bud. I'm never again taking acid in a city when I have to find my own way back home through unfamiliar territory. It also made me realize I never want to live in any kind of densely populated area. Crowd psychology in cities is fucked up, everything feels so dehumanised and detached.

I just want to live on a vineyard in a mountain valley amongst rolling green hills, make my own wine, and hobble around through the grapevines when I'm old, smacking people with my walky stick.

Yeah, I was terrified. They left me alone though.

Last year after the Phish show in Miami I was still tripping and walked a couple blocks away from the venue. Then this slobbery drug addict found me and kept following me while crying about how he has AIDS and he was getting really close and I was afraid he would bite me. I was telling him to get away and dodging him like a football player would. I got a cab before he bit me and then the cab ride was just as scary.

I went to jail once and it was actually pretty cool. I read, played cards, and watched tv all day. I was surprised to see my friend in my cell too. They even had drugs. It was kind of like when the trailer park boys go to jail.

Buying weed and coke in a national guard's post (shack) on the beach in Jamaica

Buying weed in the back a store, in a kind of strip mall, on the beach in the Dominican Republic

A couple times I went down to Juarez for pharms,  people tried to presumably con us outside the pharmacies

Buying drugs in the hood (Especially traveling) or anywhere with guns on the table is never comfortable.

Last time I was there was like 9-10 years ago. Its the same place for sure.  That was shity club.  It was around for all of my life  and was torn down recently.

The Magick stick is a great place or was saw more then a few shows of bigger bands in that super small venue.

Harpo's was the worst venue in the city god the awful things ive seen in that club. Who would think that a club ran by a junkie neo nazi would be so shady.
The exploited played there owner didnt pay them and then they got all there equipment stolen. Had to ax rest of the us tour.

Same here, I haven't been to any really rough areas aside from briefly passing through Detroit. The most ghetto places I've been to in Canada have been native reserves I guess. Winnipeg is supposed to be pretty rough in some parts but I've never been there. The parts of Toronto that are considered relatively rough are not really all that bad IME.

I have been to a bunch of boring shit towns though.

This was a great read Niffla

I'd really love to visit that part of the country because it looks so beautiful - but Wyoming has a quarter of the population of the city I live in . My dad lived in Greenland for a bit and even though he has stories of getting stoned and jumping off of icebergs, he said it's mostly an extremely depressing place to live and a lot of people are suicidal and take to alcohol.

Trap houses in the hood in NY, being one of two white people (other was my homie)

We would grab weight off this dude but the whole block was abandoned.  Boarded up windows and nothing in one of the houses but 5 black dudes, a weight bench and a bunch of drugs.  They would serve right out the windows, porch, wherever.  With dudes walking up and down the street watching while we would sit in the car and wait for dude. He would tell everyone we were all good though so no one would fuck with us or anything.  Or we would chill on the porch while we waited and smoked blunts.  People who would come up to cop probably wondered what a couple white dudes were doing in a spot like that but if we were just chillen out with dude that ran the house, we must have the pass lol.

Other spots in the hood weren't that bad, other than hustlers coming up to your window at the gas station trying to sell you shit.

I remember I had to take a shit real bad once in the hood, and every fast food place didn't have doors on their stalls.  So I went to a supermarket in a pretty bad spot, only to walk into the bathroom to a dude freestyling to himself in the mirror.  Then proceeded to ask me what I was up to, if he could get a ride around the block,  yada yada yada, hustler type shit, trying to get me for something, I could tell. While i'm standing there about to shit my pants.    I just told him the car was full (it wasn't) but he acted like I offended him, I thought I was going to have to fight this dude in a supermarket bathroom for a minute until he walked out.

There are probably a few other places I'm just not thinking of right now, but those are what came to mind.

oh yah, I don't doubt it - it looks fantastic for outdoorsy folks, and I think that most 'oil towns' are probably kinda depressing for reasons niffla described. It's pretty hard to top greenland in terms of suicidal populace too, and that's the only thing I have experience by proxy to compare that post to - 1 out of 4 people in Greenland attempts suicide at some point in their life - 6 months of almost complete darkness will do it I guess

It's so cool that we don't have to leave the country for a bit of a 'culture shock' tho, there are parts of it that are just so vastly different from what I'm used to, I'm saving up for a little bit of travel on the west coast and it's so much cheaper and easier to fly out and then rent a car, but at some point I've gotta drive my way across. seems like it's a rite of passage.

the scariest hustle puppies.

But the funny thing about Philly is that in the heart of the southwest ghetto you have places like Bartrams Garden - the oldest botanical garden in north america.

thats gnar gnar i'll have to check that yelp link in a bit

lol @ trashy garden

sort of an odd surreal place. it's the kinda city where you really have to know where to go, it's a blast and it's a very interesting place when you start exploring it....but it also reeks of hot garbage in the summer time and has a lot of grit.

Yellowstone is amazing and I've seen the most amazing lightning storm in Wyoming. The whole sky was on white fire . It was amazing and that's before i ever knew what drugs were pretty much. However during the summer round Yellowstone there are crazy big mosquitos,it's hot AF. Missouri farmland (military base area) was just as cold as Wyoming winters. We were there at the end of summer and it was at the most 20 degrees at night. Rained often .

As someone mentioned states like that often are nothing but fucking desert it seems. Not exactly desert but just ginormous stretches of dirt/sparce areas

I'd really love to visit that part of the country because it looks so beautiful - but Wyoming has a quarter of the population of the city I live in .

Haha, thanks, blues. Yes there are absolutely incredible parts of Wyoming. Rock Springs obviously just wasn't one of them.  In fact to this day, the northwest corner of Wyoming that encompasses the town of Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park -- is still my favorite place on earth by miles. It's absolutely epic on a grand scale up there and I'd highly advise/suggest getting up there to see it in person at least once in your life.

Haha that's where I moved to Montana from. I don't mind Hoquiam too much but Aberdeen is a shit hole. Lived there for like 2 years.

I got trapped there in some flop house after eating fistfuls of azures with someone. Had no idea what I was in for. Black mold everywhere, broken stove, overflowing toilet and tub, it stunk like cat pee but there was no cat. I never thought "my cool pad" meant "absolute squalor". I had to drive tripping at 4am to get a hotel and scrub myself clean. Spent the rest of the trip in the hot tub and pool. That place fucking sucks. There's sick junkies all over the place. I wish I could go around Hoquiam/Aberdeen to get to my picking parks but no. Sadly I'll be passing through in a few weeks.

What the hell were you doing in Opa-Locka?

There's gotta be a halfway decent story behind this.

I went to vocational school in Hollywood, and had a collegaue back then that lived in one of the government housing building in OPL. He'd usually bring some good blow to class if one were to ask.

Unfortunately the one time I asked, he told me I'd have to drive him to his place. Crazy fucking place...I vividly remember it was a Tuesday because he told me before he got out of the car that the cops were gonna start doing the weekly "sweeps" in a bit so we had to get out of there quick.

____________

As for worst place I've been to overall,

Jackson, MS.

Literally was told by locals to never move there.
They were self-declaring it a shit hole which was the surprising part.

Just looked like everyone and every structure in that town had given up on life.

I lived like a block away from it. I never saw much of that. I've definitely dranken quite a few 40s at that Park though.

Never a dull moment wandering around Aberdeen at 2 am. What a shit hole but it's definitely got its own character.

It's like the last place anyone visiting WA should go. The park holds the aura and depression of drug addiction and lives up to the Cobain legacy I guess. A lot more cocaine available than I would have thought. I hated that I bolted mid trip but dude was 22 getting up on a "16" year old I just got my stuff in the car and bailed. I felt guilty the whole drive that I was driving and tripping but got to the safest closest place. No one was around. Skeeze people man. And it's not like, there's anything redeeming to the town. Everyone looks like they want to kill themselves.

I never saw any coke there. All about that meth. Got some pretty fire shit in that town. Where I'm at in Montana this dope is weak.

idk, I still feel like the worst places in washington are probably much better than the worst places in PA/NY/NJ/MD/and co. - and some places in the mid west llke outside St. Louis, and Detroit, and sections of Chicago(though I do love Chicago and I think compared to DC, Baltimore, and Philly, it's crime issues are easily on par if not a bit overblown and concentrated)

Chester, PA, Camden, NJ, and East St. Louis are probably some of the worst areas in all of the industrialized nations, easily, for instance.

You know, oddly enough I've never been to Maine despite it not being that  far away.

I mainly picture everyone eating lobster, talking in that stephen king accent, and being blue collar - never really thought of it having bad areas - but the wilderness up there is pretty fierce I hear.

Appalachia in general can be kinda a scary place. My parents have a lake house way out in the middle of nowhere in the blue ridges and honestly driving out there in the middle of no where makes me very uneasy when I'm driving at night. Particularly because I'm mostly unprepared it I break down out there. I think my cell gets signal most of the ride so it's not nearly as remote as other areas out there...but man, at night..:uhoh:

LA. Never been to the nice parts, but I have been to the shitty parts, and it's total shit. It's so much worse than any other large city I've ever been to.

The bad parts of Oakland. Most of Oakland is nice. The bad parts are just about as bad as you can possibly imagine. I made a point to drive through all the worst parts with a friend of mine one time. Really shitty, almost scary place.

Denver. Went to the suburbs around it. Shitty place: fucked up dented vehicles with broken windows, people doing weird shit at 2 AM, just an all around weird fucked up place. I've heard the nice parts of it are very nice (much like Oakland I imagine).

Seattle. Not anywhere near as bad as any of those three, but just had a generally shitty vibe with generally shitty annoying people. Everyone was just kind of a dick for no reason, and the city was beautiful but crappy.

Best city I've been to (even though you didn't ask): Portland by far.

or... living on the streets in lethbridge alberta canada during the winter... one of the windiest places on the planet.

you don't even know what cold is until your trying to not die on a bench when it's -55 degrees Celsius with the wind chill, which is blowing snow around at like 120 kms and hour... for you american folk, that's -67 F, and about 190 mph... unbelievably cold... like deadly cold... and when you have no shelter, your gonna have a bad fucking time.

worst time of my life... living on the streets in calgary in the winter sucked too, but at least the wind isn't completely insane.

There weren't any shelters opened up on extremely cold nights like that?
I'd surely expect that in Canada as it's a common thing in the US.

I remember in FL, the few times in winter where it would dip under 40F, a couple schools would open in the area to house the homeless for the evening. Obviously nowhere near life-threatening temperatures, which is why I can't imagine the same thing isn't being done in your area.

you don't even know what cold is until your trying to not die on a bench when it's -55 degrees Celsius with the wind chill, which is blowing snow around at like 120 kms and hour... for you american folk, that's -67 F, and about 190 mph... unbelievably cold... like deadly cold... and when you have no shelter, your gonna have a bad fucking time.

worst time of my life... living on the streets in calgary in the winter sucked too, but at least the wind isn't completely insane.

what the fuck? thats insane to the point where i'm not entirely sure i believe it. sounds nutty as fuck

such a weird place to try and be forced into 'sanity'... it baffles me how they think it's a healthy environment for people going through such heavy shit... I mean really... prolly one of the worst places you can be.

I seriously 100% can say I'd rather go to jail any day than go through that again... a fucking nightmare.

Homeless shelters are horrible places rape is super prevalent . If you have any serious mental health issues you are going to get raped . It's so fucked .

I would be OK if the whole of humanity just died off.

No , but from what I've heard from homeless people who I've known. I think that there has been studies on it about the cycle of jail homeless shelter mental hospital addiction back to jail. Rinse repeat till dead.

Without a doubt that is true of jails.
I'd never really considered the same type of cyclical, systematic bullshit going on in mental health facilities and homeless shelters. Though, it makes sense.

I can say from experience that homeless shelters are indeed horrible places... they stink so bad, you sleep like inches away from everyone else on these flimsy little mats, and there is a LOT of violence... I can't say I've seen any rape myself, but I mostly just stayed away from them when I was on the streets.. only times I stayed in them was when it was deadly cold outside (see my above posts about the kinda cold I'm talking about) and even then I hated everything about existence as soon as I walked in... I remember feeling like I would rather just go do something crazy and spend some time in jail until winter ended or something
